When the Nazis invaded Holland in 1940 many people would not stand for the cruel and racist ways of the Nazi party. Among these people were the Ten Boom family. Corrie Ten Boom was a WWII hero who helped save hundreds of Jews by hiding them in her house and leading a network of safe houses in Holland.
The couple proceeds to cross the street and just as the woman believes her fears were unjustified, the two men pull guns on her and her husband thus evoking a scene of chaos as the two black men steal their vehicle. The film Boyz N the Hood is a story about life in South Central Los Angeles. The film was wrote and directed by John Singleton in 1991. I chose this movie because of its relevance to the course and how it reflects pop culture in that time period. The opening line in the movie “one out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime” really catches the audience attention (Nicolaides & Singleton, 1991). This movie goes into detail and shows the life of three young males living in the hood of Los Angeles battling a life surrounded by drugs, violence, and questions of race.

Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch Christian woman born on April 15, 1892, in Haarlem, Netherlands. She is known as the face of the Resistance for surviving Nazi concentration camps and holding a steadfast faith in God throughout her journey. She was an unforgettable evangelist throughout World War II because of her and her family’s desire to serve people from all walks of life, including Jews who were being persecuted during the war. Although she was in immense torment in the camps, she remained joyful and reminded other prisoners alongside her that God is always with them. After the war, Corrie dedicated her life to spreading a message of joy and endurance through tribulations, and in doing so, she helped millions of people, even today.

The Help (2011) directed by Tate Taylor, is an inspirational, courageous and empowering story about Southern women in the 1960s. It's the story of the help: the black maids of Jackson, Mississippi, and the relationship with their white employers. The central theme of the film is courage, and how the characters embrace courage to overcome obstacles and fight for social justice. Whether it is their ability to deviate from in-group norms, or overcome fear, courage is essential throughout the characters' journeys. In this essay, I will analyse the situations endured by the characters, and how they respond to these situations with courage.
It tells the story of a southern society girl, Skeeter, who, upon returning from college with dreams of becoming a writer, turns her small Mississippi town on its ear by choosing to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent white families. The women’s stories are similar to Crook’s story in Of Mice and Men as they are all powerless because of their poverty, and skin color. In both stories they are constantly reminded of the discrimination, and racism in their everyday lives. In Of Mice and Men Crooks almost gets into an argument with Curley’s wife when she scorns "Listen, Nigger, you know what I can do to you if you open your trap?" Crooks knows that the only thing worse than being a woman on a ranch is being a black man.

Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
