How to Become an Adult: Cory Mehnert’s Story
Having four toddlers is a struggle. Having four toddlers and going to college seems impossible, but it isn’t. Cory Mehnert figured out a way to do it, and so can others. It’s all about finding the right college, she explains, “National Lewis had a great program for adults, so I was able to go to school while being a mom and that was really important to me.” Working hard reaps rewards and allows a person to mature, and Cory Mehnert is an excellent example of this.
As Cory sits down across the table, she smiles at me, completely at ease. With a little prompting, she tells me a little background information, telling me that her first year of college was at Butler University in Indianapolis from 1998 to 1999. She originally majored in international management, but switched her major, stating that, “I knew I wanted to have a big family and I realized that I did not want to be travelling internationally and be away from my children. Looking back on it, she tells me that if there were one thing that she were going to change, it would have to be majoring in teaching at the very beginning, since now she knows that teaching is her calling and that it’s definitely where she should be. She tells me that she wishes she “had more years teaching” and would have if she had majored in teaching at the very beginning. On the other hand, she wouldn’t have realized that she didn’t like “professors who are just there to have a job and professors that aren’t super dedicated”, which likely helps her to be the teacher that she is today.
