Cosmopolitanism is incredibly beneficial in terms of promoting global connectedness and uniting nations across the world, as the more connected we are to others, the more likely we are to abandon our nationalist ideals in favor of our responsibility to our global community (Held, 2005, 153).

In this way, cosmopolitanism is necessary if we want to witness the widespread protection of human rights, and the implementation of worldwide social justice (Fine, 2008, 8).
While cosmopolitanism has the ability to create real worldwide change, and implement world peace, and the promotion of human rights, this social theory is still flawed. While reading Calhoun’s analysis of cosmopolitanism, the main criticism that undermined cosmopolitanism, was the idealistic tendencies of this social theory. (Calhoun, 2002, 870). Cosmopolitanism is a very complex social justice theory, that attempts to understand the many intricacies of human life, and create some sort of shared worldwide understanding. However, a main problem that was outlined by Calhoun arises, when certain conditions are idealized. To clarify, cosmopolitanism is based off of the idea of a shared global morality, however, this does not take into account the actual conditions of people’s lives (Calhoun, 2002, 871). While it would be nice to say, that all people are afforded social justice and human rights, because that is what our shared morality governs us to do, this is not the reality of the situation.
