Counseling Skills Counselors must possess therapeutic counseling skills in order to help clients work through their crisis. After watching the interactive video of a counseling session, it is evident the vitality of proper counseling skills. For this paper, I will discuss three actions the counselor in the video should have done differently to make the counseling session therapeutic along with new insights I have gained. The paper will conclude with my personal counseling strengths and weaknesses I currently possess and how to work to become a better counselor.

The first insight I gained is maintaining neutral facial expression when a client is describing their crisis. If a counselor has a horrific look on their face, the client may leave out essential parts of the story, worried they will be judged. Another insight I have gained from the interactive video is making sure there are no interruptions in the counseling sessions. The only reason I am aware of my weaknesses is because of my residencies. I tend to ware my emotions on my face, which is a huge disadvantage as a counselor. When an individual is sharing their story with me, I cannot help but have facial expressions. This is something I will need to work on for as long as I am a counselor. I must be mindful that my facial expressions can influence how the counseling session goes with my clients. The only way to improve my expressions is by practice. I must practice by video taping myself with mock trials. Body language is another skill I must improve on. I tend to sit with my legs and arms crossed, which can make the client feel I am guarded and not open to communicating. I must learn to sit with an open posture to improve the communication with my clients. I believe body language is learned through practice and research. If I understand how body language effects counseling, I may be more mindful of my positioning in
