Recommended: Elements of a toulmin argument
The Toulmin method is an effective tool that helps determine the efficacy of an argument by using this method the author’s argumentative strategies are evaluated to determine their strength. This essay will use the Toulmin method in order to assess the strength of James E. McWilliams’ argument. The Toulmin method will break down the author’s argument into components—the claim, evidence, warrant, qualifiers, and rebuttal. Through using the Toulmin method, Williams’ argument and the components of his argument will be dissected and individually analyzed to determine each component’s effectiveness and how it contributes to the overall power and credibility of Williams’ argument.
Two students, Jenny and Mark must choose and debate a topic to persuade the other of their viewpoint. After some discussion, they settled on Prostitution, to legalize and regulate the industry or to keep it illegal. Mark and Jenny use many rhetorical techniques in order to persuade the other of their viewpoint. Mark remembers the lesson on the Toulmin method to analyze arguments. He thought this could help him is making sure he had his claim with supporting fact and data.
Louis Riel, one of the Metis most trusted allies and leaders. He was a voice for the Metis, and led two Metis rebellions against the Canadian government. He wished to save and preserve the rights and way of life of the Metis. Although some feel that Riel was a traitor to the Canadian government, I take into consideration of his alliances with the Natives, and think that Louis Riel was a martyr. What is a martyr, anyway?
The first section of your syllabus entitled “What We’re Doing in This Course, and Why” intrigued me. Specifically, due to its mention of the concept of rhetorical thinking being used to figure out what to say and how to say it. To me, this section encompasses all disciplines who tend to use different words to describe how you present an argument both in a correct and incorrect manner (framing, bias, logical fallacies ect.). I’m interested to see how different disciplines utilize this skill from simply being as bland and logical as possible such as in a scientific paper, or to making an effort to persuade an audience in a speech such as in a debate.
When I look at my other pieces of writing, the “ Persuasive Letter” is the best one I could think of. As I look at the letter I can really tell I tried my best when writing it. I gave a lot of detail, and I did what the direction told me to do. Here an example from my work of how good I structure a sentence. “ I have come to realization that African American are more likely to be arrested, and receive more for a crime they commited than any other race”.
What is a Toulmin Argument? This is when you are considering who your audience is specifically, and you are considering their counterarguments before hand. The analysis suggest you to strongly have prepared evidence and have in mind possible disagreements. A good argument must be fair not a one-sided position. To choose a good Toulmin argument strategies such as answering questions like, what happened, do you believe it is true or false?

Try taking your main theme and turning it into a statement such as, “The children are desensitized,” then you have a clear argument and can from there add other necessary information. You struggle with repetition, but this is primarily because you allow certain concepts to straddle paragraphs. Do not overlap your paragraphs the information
The author that is more convincing about their point of view is the point author. The reason that this essay is better is because they used more evidence than the counterpoint author. The writer of the counterpoint uses their own opinion to back up their argument “Millions of Americans see violent imagery in films and on TV every day, but very few commit violent crimes” (2). This is not a valid point to support their argument because they never use any fact based evidence to back up their claim. The counterpoint author does use evidence to support their point of view.

The thinking processes and opinions of every human differ at one point or another and are influenced by many variables around us. People will argue their differences in order to persuade others to agree with their perspective. We see these arguments in our daily lives around our workplace with our peers and bosses, at home with our family, and within our society with politics and social movements. Arguments attempt to use reason to allow people to establish conclusions, but how do you know if you are giving or hearing a good argument? This discussion will analyze two arguments about the War in Iraq and determine if they are good arguments.
Argumentative writing is the last choice that writing has to offer. It’s main purpose is to persuade the reader and usually has a question with multiple answers in it. Narrative writing contains more creativity
I built my argument through an inductive essay, specific examples to a generalization. In the introduction, I focused on introducing the three examples I would write on with relatable scenarios that would catch the audience’s attention. I used a closed thesis. The three following paragraphs after the introduction mostly consisted of second-hand evidence. I did a lot of research and used statistics, otherwise known as quantitative evidence to support my thesis.
A proper main idea for the quotation used above could include cliché real life examples. In this case, a possibility could be how difficult decision making encourages growth. Thesis: This is where you state your specific argument. Let me just note that your thesis should definitely be developed BEFORE your topic. You have to know what you are arguing for, otherwise you are simply rambling.
Counterargument paragraph (opponent’s view) A. Topic sentence: Some parents claim that the only way for their children to behave properly is through physical discipline. B. Elaboration on topic sentence: i. Why do people believe that physical punishment is the right way to discipline their children? (source used) ii. What are their justifications? (source used) C. Refutation of the opponent’s view i. Prove that physical punishment is not the way to motivating your child into doing the right thing.
