Courage, what is courage? Well from the dictionary the word courage means "the ability to do something that frightens one and strength in the face of pain or grief”. Courage is something that people display in their everyday life, you see courage on the streets, at school and maybe even at home but you probably never even notice it or even thought about it. The book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes was written by Chris Crutcher, this book is filled with courageousness, mystery and spine chilling events.
Most of her late adulthood was centered on taking care of her sick husband and mother and church activities. In 2008 her husband Raymond became very sick and later passed away. She then took on the role of taking care of her mother who too became ill. Due to her illness, she moved her mother in her house where she took care of her and accommodated all of her needs for several years before her passing in 2013. 2013 was also the year that her great-great granddaughter was born, making her the sixth generation alive at the time in our family.
What is courage? The dictionary defines it as, “the ability to do something that frightens one”. But the belief that someone is doing something to frighten another seems inaccurate. We’ve all grown up knowing courage as an intangible fire that only comes from within and it helps guide you when you’re feeling doubtful or scared. This type of true courage is displayed by Piggy from the novel, Lord of the Flies, Martin Luther King Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail and Tim O'Brien in the short story, On the Rainy River.

Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.
Nelson Mandela bests clarified that courage “is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear” (Brainy Quotes). Humans have the attribute of courage within them; what defines someone is if they allow the characteristic to shine or to hide within them. Courage is a very powerful and impactful word that allows people to complete the daily tasks contained within their typical lives and allows them to complete the hard times when they obtain fear. There are numerous ways to define courage to get a better grasp on the understanding of what this powerful and impacting term truly represents.
Acts Of Courage Courage is the ability to try something not easy for one’s self. According to the Oxford Dictionary, courage is “The ability to do something that frightens one; bravery”. The theme of ‘courage and what courage brings’ was embroidered deeply in Tim O’Brien’s book, The Things They Carried. The book talks about the traumatic experiences Tim and his soldier friends had been through during the Vietnamese War. The soldiers in Nam were all showing different acts of courage.

Heroes go through many hardships, battles, and lessons to fully understand what is means to be courageous. Courage is the ability to conquer and face something that scares someone. A person can’t just decide one day to fully face their fears.
Why Becoming Civilized? It the beginning of the story, Huck doesn't seem to like the idea of becoming civilized, until the Widow Douglas wants to help him, he started to like it, but things got difficult for him. Society is not going to accept the way he is starting to think. Miss Watson, the widow's sister is trying to encourage Huck to become a civilized kid, but Huck doesn't seem to understand the way of how she wants him to be is going to help him.

Courage can be defined by something everyone wishes to display. Not only is it an attribute of good character, but it's what makes us worthy of respect. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main characters would not have been able to make it without having and acting upon courage.
Courage is having the ability to act, despite fear, pain, or uncertainty. Courage does not suppress fear but allows one to continue in the face of fear. I made the decision, for example, to tell my parents about my sexuality. I am gay, and I knew the scrutiny I could face at home, and in society if I told my parents.
