Courage is the ability to do something that frightens oneself. To fight against the hardships in life people must use perseverance. To gain courage, people must not fear the conflicts that may come their way. When someone uses their determination to fight against the opposition, reason will bring understanding. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the members of the Finch family display true courage when they stick to the truth without compromise. Atticus shows courage when he is guarding Tom Robinson's cell alone at night. Atticus tells Jem what real courage is. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (128). Miss Caroline is new to the town and school, she did not know anything about the Cunninghams and their lifestyle.
