Atticus’s and his courage “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway” - John Wayne.
In to kill a mocking bird, courage is seen all through the book. Many characters throughout the book have shown great courage. However, we discover that Atticus is an outlier through his personality, actions, and words.
First of all, Atticus finch. (Maycomb county’s lawyer) takes on a rape case. In chapter 9, page 99,
We find out that a young black man named Tom Robinson is accused of raping a young woman named Mayella. Atticus states that even though he's being licked, (Because of Maycombs' racism) there's no reason not to try and win. This goes to shows a lot of courage trying to save a black man in Maycomb county. Not to mention, the racists that are filled in Maycomb county, and the hatred for the black overrides the love for them. Hence the bravery of Atticus (a white man) sticking up for a black guy takes a lot of nerve. Not to mention, Atticus is seen in chapter 15 staying outside Tom’s cell to prevent lynchers. He wants to be in his way not what society refers to as “ Normal” or “Proper”. For example, We see in chapter 13, Aunt Alexandra says that Scout needs to be a “ Proper “ lady. Atticus finally takes his sister’s words but when he sees that leaves Scout in tears he notices that that's not who he is. He tells Scout to forget everything he said. He doesn't want his kids to be in the social norm, he wants them to have their own beliefs and rights. Another reason why Atticus is going against society is that he has a black cooking lady named Calpernea. Many people have criticized him for it but Atticus states that Caleperna is not to go anywhere.
