What fascinates me further is learning what occurs when the brain does not work flawlessly. Whether it be aphasia, cognitive-communication or swallowing disorders, this inquisitiveness became my catalyst for my desire to obtain a master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders at FIU. I yearn to become more multi-layered and knowledgeable. At very few universities can one experience a program that concentrates on these aspects, from learning to direct practice. I observed how speech therapists, occupational therapists, and teachers used their skills to assist his progress. Their persistence, diligence, and compassion helped my brother overcome many speech impediments and graduate high school. Their versatility regarding modifying treatment plans for various difficulties made my brothers goals achievable. I would stand behind the two-way mirror and witness my brother’s progression with articulation and voicing his sentiments. My brother’s speech-language pathologist involved the entire family, assigned tasks entailed incorporating my brother during playtime and reading him stories. My inclusion with his treatment enthused me to seek helping others academically, verbally, and socially throughout my life.
