For my service leaning assignment, I volunteered at the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival in support of the Montgomery County Food Bank receiving donations at the festival entrance. In volunteering at the event, I learned the differences in service learning, volunteerism and community service and will provide details in what I learned a about each. I will also provide details and examples of teamwork, communication and networking experiences gained while at the event. A brief overview of the Montgomery County Food bank will also be provided with information on the assignment task, measurable success and interaction with fellow students and organization directors.
Why did you not listen to the advice of your advisers to do your community service? Why do you act in such a lazy manor? The value of service-learning is based on two main dimensions, which are normative and pedagogical effectiveness. The focus of this study is on the pedagogical effectiveness dimension and how service-learning provides unique experiences and situations where the students must adapt, which is the “essence of the impact or active ingredient” for learning in this format (8). Service-learning encourages students to obtain more responsibility and are given more opportunities to view education as an “evolving process” instead of an “end product” (8). Through reflection, students develop and challenge their skills of critical thinking and connects them to a common goal with the community that promotes their “affective, civic, social, and cognitive development” (8). Proponents say there are many advantages for this type of learning including: allowing students to become participants instead of passive “sponges,” and expanding the limits of the classroom to the outside world allowing students to participate in the community.
I’m applying to Northern Arizona University to further develop myself as an ecologist. My passion for wildlife, especially herpetofauna has been in development since my youth. This passion has later transitioned towards a vision to conserve natural resources for future generations to enjoy. I believe that I have an amazing ability to find cryptic herpetofauna in diverse environments, and enjoy physically demanding fieldwork. When searching for rare individuals, I am motivated by the increased difficulty of the search.
By graduation, every student knew each other and felt connected as Keller graduates. Due to a small student-to-teacher ratio, we were able to bond with our teachers. Many of our teachers continue to serve as our mentors. Our schools also taught us the important of service to our community, enhancing Keller’s already communal feel. From the age of 14, I participated in enhancement projects at my high school and began volunteering for the City of Keller, feeling further connected to the city.
On some days, not enough volunteers would come for the program and it made it difficult because we could no longer work one-on-one, and some of the kids would run around and lose focus. But on days where all the volunteers came the classes were fantastic; multiple volunteers could work with one kid and it was just so simple to run everything. The classes were way more fun when more people were there and it made it easy to play games and get to know everybody. This knowledge about communities will help me in forming a community in the Honors Housing because I know that to get involved and be a full member of the community, I have to not only participate in events and meet people, but also encourage others to take part in events.

For every year in my high school career, I did service at my old elementary and middle school, All Saints Catholic School. During Presidents’ Day weekend, I provided help at their Church’s carnival for four days--Thursday to Sunday. It 's a hot a sunny day and also the first day of high school for 14 year old Audrey Wells. She walks past the local soup kitchen and sees volunteers inside laughing and having fun, wishing she had something like that she continued on her walk to school. As she enters her class her teacher says that he requires 10 community service hours per quarter to get a passing grade. He also says that there are many benefits to community service such as, getting teens out of their homes, giving adolescence a feel of the real world and, and providing students with chances to meet people outside of school that would get to personally know us. The primary aim of mandatory volunteering is to encourage teenagers to be decent and caring citizens. By this way, high school students are to complete 30 to 40 hours unpaid service in their communities in order to graduate. Some people claim that having mandatory volunteering in the school program is extracurricular and affects students’ activity in the class. However, I strongly believe that it would be beneficial for their future states in a number of ways. First reason that I believe mandatory volunteering is beneficial is that it involves a great number of people from young age to serve in community.
Volunteering is what directed me to pursue my career as a social worker. It has always been clear to me and I been volunteering off and on since I was 15 years old. Over the past semester, I have taken part in a service learning placement to better understand the diversity that occurs within the Hamilton community, where I will be doing various clinical placements in subsequent years in my nursing program. My particular placement was at an elementary school, Pauline Johnson Elementary School, where I spend three hours every week with a second-grade class. In my role as a service learner, I acted as a teacher 's assistant. During class time, I would go around and help various students with their work, encourage students to try their best, supervise during nutrition breaks and interact with students during music and gym classes.
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society.
