Not everyone’s idea of normal is the same. Creating societal norms is dangerous for those who do not fit under it. Technology can be used to create these categories. The novel Feed by M.T. Anderson illustrates the bubbles that technology can place us in. There is a fine line between using technology and becoming it. Some people can find the technology as a saver, while others can find it as a threat. People have different idea of a perfect society. M.T. Anderson contrasts perspective and societal norms by having technology symbolize the fine line between utopia and dystopia. Feed by M.T. As time went on, he started to find Violets anti-system attitude annoying. Titus wanted her to be ‘normal’ like his friends. All of his friends were reliant on the feed. They would change within seconds to fit the trend. The feed would post ads in their brains and they without thinking would buy it. Although Violet had the feed, she was not like this. She was unable to get the implant until she was seven years old. The late installed caused life altering damaged when Violet get hacked. This would cause her death. Titus tried to stay with Violet because she was dying. He would slowly start ignoring her chats and put a busy signal on. Violet wanted to live before she died. She wanted to experience things she never did before. She wanted to be normal like Titus and his friends. Violet could not do that. She ended up slowly dying. Losing her ability to move. As time went on, it would get worst. Titus and Violet broke up. He did not see her again until she was in a coma state. Her father blamed Titus for her death. The feed killed her. Violet Durn faced the ultimate price for it. If she followed the societal norm of getting the feed as a baby, she would have not died. If she did not try to not be categorized, she could have had her medical paid for. Her idea of a utopian society was by trying to use the feed instead of let it use her. That went against Titus view. The different utopian views caused them to break up. M.T. Anderson illustrates that technology is a great tool, but everyone has different purposes on their ideal way of using it. Utopia is bias.
