Chapter 1: An overview of victims
Whenever there has been the mention of the criminal process, we are tempted to think about the struggle faced by an accused. Indeed the main parties in a criminal trial are the State and the Accused, however someone has suffered from prejudiced, who initiates the criminal process and that person is a VICTIM who seems to be lost in the web of the criminal trial. It is a long-standing right that the State should not deny justice to anybody, victims included.

1.1 Who is a “Victim”?

Therefore whenever a crime is committed the prejudiced party turns towards the criminal justice system. The goals of a criminal justice system is to prevent crime, protect the public, support victims of crimes, their family and witnesses, punish offenders for the crime committed and helping the offenders reintegrating in the community and making them law abiding citizens.
Victims have a significant role to play in the administration of justice. Their testimony may lift veils over many facets of case facts thus giving a helping hand in keeping the streams of justice pure. Victims help in preventing miscarriages of justice. Without the cooperation of victims and witnesses, the criminal justice system would cease to function. The prominent role played by victims compels us to have a cursory glance over the Rights of victims.
1.4.1 Why should crime victims have rights?
 Everyone is equal before the law; thus unlike the defendant victims also should enjoy certain rights.
 The criminal justice system should account for the interests of victims so as while dealing with the suspect; the distress of victims is not
