In the case of Tara Brown’s murder, various groups of individuals are affected. For hundreds of years historians have debated about the most significant factor for the advancement of civil rights for African-Americans from 1880-1980. Chapter 7, titled “Who Are the Victims of Violence,” was interesting because the author wrote the chapter from the victim’s perspective and through their experiences. I found it sad to read about all these victims who are seen to be blamed for the torture that they endured. The chapter is introduced with some rights that victims are given by the states to protect them. These rights include the right to be noticed, present, heard, protected, have a speedy trial, restitution, and the right of privacy and confidentiality. Prior to reading this chapter, I had no knowledge of the specific rights that victims are promised, but I think it is honorable of our government to offer them these rights.
Victim witness programs are used by the government in order to provide support and assistance to those who fall victim to a crime. According to Victim Witness Program, the primary goals of such programs, include but are not limited to, encouraging victims to participate in any parole and supervised release processes of their offender, notify and facilitate victims in participation of any hearing or release dates in regards to their offender, provide options for supportive services, and advocate for crime victims (2015, para.1). The organization under which the victim-witness program is located is under a system, which has many internal constituencies, thus creating competing and conflicting purposes. The goals of the victim-witness program are quite simple and seek out to give the victim the right to be represented during the processing of the offender, however, given the multiple roles the court, for example, must serve, the goals of the victim-witness program can be both complex and conflicting.
America began to take a serious interest how victims are affected by the crimes they have endured in the 1970’s. The catalyst for the Victim’s Rights Movement was related to the 1973 supreme court decision “Linda R.S vs Richard D”. That case had a court ruling to stated that the complaint did not the “ the legal standing to keep the prosecutor's' office from discriminately applying a statute criminalizing non-payment of child support. The 1960’s to the 1980’s was a time for change in the United States. During these two decades, groups in America fought for, and achieved, changes in federal and state policy. During this period, the Civil Rights movement, made up of organizations stretching from the NAACP to the SCLC, worked to achieve equality under the law for all citizens, regardless of skin color. Advocacy groups for gun-rights, like the N.R.A., gained strength during this period and helped drive change in federal law concerning gun ownership and regulation. Inmates and progressive legislators made strides to reform and improve the prison system in the United States and defend the constitutional rights of those incarcerated.

All of these, together with a great deal of other principals, have to be there for justice to be done to the whole society.
