Critical Analysis Assignment
The video interview I chose to submit is an interview near the end of Kayla’s sessions with me. I selected this video because I found it displayed most of my learning goals from the beginning of the semester. Throughout this paper, refer to Appendix A for a detailed description of my learning goals from the beginning of the semester. Overall, I will look at how effectively my learning goals were presented in this video, as well as the learning goals that I still need improvement on. I will also be analyzing what I could have done differently for this video interview to be more effective. Paraphrasing is used to facilitate client exploration and clarification of issues, this is a useful skill to use to let Kayla know I understand what she is telling me (Ivey, Ivey, & Zalaquett, 2014). Paraphrasing is an important active listening skill, “by paraphrasing the speaker’s message (both content and feelings) by restating, in the listener’s own words, what the listener thinks the speaker is trying to say” helps the client and the counselors understanding of what is being said (Weger, Castle, & Emmett, 2010, p. 35). At 1:55, I believe I effectively paraphrased what Kayla had stated, in doing so, she appeared comfortable and understood. Partially through the paraphrasing, I stopped and asked, “is that what I’m hearing?” this validated that what I was saying was correct. Another situation where I used paraphrasing effectively was at 4:20, I then continued to ask what that looked like to her, I think this helped me gain a better understanding of what she was telling me but also helped Kayla identify and add meaning to what she was saying, instead of using such a broad statement (Ivey, Ivey, & Zalaquett, 2014). At 22:40, I should have summarized the session instead of stating, “we talked about a lot”, that sentence should have led to me summarizing the session. This would have connected our discussion and wrapped up the session well by drawing out key facts, thoughts, and emotions (Ivey, et al., 2014). Summarizing helps to “condense or crystallize the essence of what the client is saying and feeling” (Counselling Tutor, 2017, p. 1). Therefore, need to continue to work on paraphrasing and summarizing the sessions to help the flow of the sessions and to ensure both the client and I understand what is being
