The situation presented in Case 12: Independent Thinker (2014) focuses on a teacher names Alison, who felt she could be come a change agent within her school district, so she applied and was approved for an instructional coaching position. She felt she knew a lot about, and saw the value in the “Promises Bound” reading program, and saw that other teachers in her district not implementing the program into their individual classrooms. She had already been training colleagues in this program, so she knew she could help others learn to implement this beneficial instructional support. This knowledge and experience helped her assume the instructional coaching role in her school. After working with Jane, a teacher in her district, Alison had some struggle in getting a total “buy in” to “Promises Bound.”
It is sad so much confusion surrounds Initiative 42, especially when nearly 200,000 Mississippians signed petitions to have it placed on the November ballot to amend the state Constitution. Schemata are mental representations / rules to help children understand their world and solve problems. Concepts are rules that describe properties of environmental events and their relations to other concepts (Martin, Carlson & Buskist, 2007). Children obtain schemata and concepts by engaging with their surroundings. The
Schema or “mental concepts, as a generally way of thinking about or interacting with the ideas and objects in the environment” (Beginnings and Beyond 110). Schemas develop in everyone, regardless of age (110). For example, “young children learn perceptual schemas as they taste and feel; preschool children use language and pretend play to create their understanding; school-age children develop more abstract ideas, such as morality schemas, which help them determine how to act” (111).Young children best gather new information and knowledge through play. Jean Piaget believed “children learn best when they are playing, rather than being told, shown, or explained to” (110). Children can either assimilate schemas or accommodate schemas as they take in new information.
Cognitive development is a process which enhancing the ability of learning. The cognitive theories emphasize on conscious thoughts which highlight the mental aspects of development such as logic and memory. The primary factors of cognitive theories is the structure and development of the individual’s thought processes and the means of these processes can effort the person’s understanding of the world. Therefore, the cognitive theories study on how this understanding, and the expectations it creates, can affect the individual’s behavior. There are three types of cognitive development theories in human which are Piaget’s Cognitive development theory, Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Cognitive theory and Information-Processing theory.
