There are specific items listed on the negotiation checklist that I feel are valuable and fundamental for negotiations strategies. These include your overall goal, issues, and best alternative. Everything can be negotiated and is fair game, no friend, they are your enemy. During negotiations all parties must have understanding of what the end goal results are and the current issues at hand. In some negotiation cases the end goal cannot be achieved and an alternative goal is likely more promising. Items that could overcome specific concerns are gloating, assuming cross-cultural negotiations are just like local negotiations, and the most common concern is failing to pay attention to your opponent. When conducting negotiations one must emphasize the benefits to the other party to ensure success. When you reach an impasse in negotiations reasonably barter. Consider making a trade/deal, be creative to reach your goal. The other is to determine and understand paybacks and consequences for each party in the negotiation. I found the book called Crucial Conversation, Tools For Talking When Stakes Are High by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenney, Ron McMillan, and AL Switzler. The book addressed a topic that is largely misunderstood and vastly underestimated, addressing high-stakes dialogue. Authors discuss how stakes are high, the opinion is very one-sided and emotions run strong. We all on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis experience some form of negotiations.
