How can we become cultural competent? We can become cultural competent by first understanding our own culture and believes. Then we have to be aware that there are other people with different cultures and values, but that does not mean they are wrong. Finally, we need to treat other with respect regardless of our different point of views.
The authors present the Supervisor Multicultural Competence Inventory (SMCI), a comprehensive framework of multicultural supervision competencies. The authors organized the SMCI guidelines for developing competencies into six domains. The first domain is supervisor-focused personal development and the second domain is supervisee focused personal development. The third domain is conceptualization, which refers to promoting an understanding of the impact of individual and contextual factors on clients’ lives. The fourth domain is skills, which refers to practicing relevant and sensitive interventions when working with diverse clientele.
For me, cultural competence is all about understanding the culture, belief and value of other people and your own. It is how we deal with our own and other people’s conviction. For one’s self, it is being culturally aware of how the world works and how each culture is different from each other. It is acquiring knowledge of other people’s customs and achieving cultural skills to share to everyone. It is our willingness to value other people’s way of life and accepting them openly.
According to the Rogers & Vismara article, while cultural factors may influence the course of detection, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, child treatment programs for autism tend to lack cultural considerations. Is cultural competence more important than counseling competence (Sue text and lecture notes)? I believe that cultural competence and counseling competence go hand in hand. You can not experience counseling competence without being culturally competent. I do not believe that we can be unbiased as counselors but being aware of our bias is important in regards to cultural competence.

The diversity in the United States continues to grow, increasing the demand of creating more cultural competent programs. Health outcomes are addressed by race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. In research. race and ethnicity are potential predictors for a particular outcome. There is need for more research studies in order to provide an understanding of the different needs among ethnic minority groups.

Cultural competency: Indians Culture competency is defined as one has the knowledge, the abilities and the skill to deliver care congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices (Purnell, 2013). As a nurse or a health care provider, increasing ones consciousness of culture diversity improves the possibilities for health care practitioners to provide competent care (Purnell, 2013). Nurses and all health care providers should be aware of other cultures to provide the best care that they can for that individual. Developing a relationship with diverse cultural groups involves good interpersonal skills and the application of knowledge and techniques learned from the physical, biological, and social sciences as well as the humanities (Purnell, 2013). Over the past four months, this course has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had during my first year of college. Although I have always realized the importance of being culturally competent in daily life, specifically healthcare, I was unaware of the many ways that cultural competence can be obtained. The insight that the EYLF sets out to achieve for cultural competence is ongoing learning and reflective practise. Educators need to engage and foster ongoing learning that is required and inclusion from other professionals when engaging in critical reflection. Critical reflection on matters such as professional reading, networking with other professionals in that same field, and learning from and connecting with families and the local community. The reflection includes reflection on relationships and partnerships with families, the extent to which diversity is respected and the curriculum supports high expectations and equity and also each staff members level of cultural competence.
