How can we become cultural competent? We can become cultural competent by first understanding our own culture and believes. Then we have to be aware that there are other people with different cultures and values, but that does not mean they are wrong. Finally, we need to treat other with respect regardless of our different point of views.
a.k.a. a.k.a. a.k.a. Cultural competence also includes linguistic competence. Linguistic competence is the use of language through the expression and interpretation of concepts, thoughts, feelings, facts, and opinions to perform oral and written discussions (Linguistic Competence, n.d.).

II. As an educator we should know and understand our own culture identity which is the first step to become a culturally competent practitioner. From that we will get to know how our cultural experience has moulded our own life which made us capable to acknowledge how these features impact on others. For me, cultural competence is all about understanding the culture, belief and value of other people and your own. It is how we deal with our own and other people’s conviction. For one’s self, it is being culturally aware of how the world works and how each culture is different from each other. It is acquiring knowledge of other people’s customs and achieving cultural skills to share to everyone. It is our willingness to value other people’s way of life and accepting them openly.
The lack of cultural competency by physicians in health care settings is producing many barriers to health care that is negatively affecting Hispanic families, such as miscommunications, poor adherence to medications and health promotion strategies, and misunderstandings that lead to misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment for Hispanics. This issue is alarming because the Hispanic population makes up roughly 17% of the entire U.S. population, which is a staggering figure that can’t be ignored. Some solutions that have been tried in the past but failed include, establishing more community-based programs to assist this segment of the population, hospitals pushing for prevention programs, and greater efforts by health institutions on training physicians to improve all aspects of communication. The diversity in the United States continues to grow, increasing the demand of creating more cultural competent programs. Health outcomes are addressed by race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. In research. race and ethnicity are potential predictors for a particular outcome. There is need for more research studies in order to provide an understanding of the different needs among ethnic minority groups.
Cultural Competence Significance While in actuality, there are high-ranking alcohol dependence rates among American Indians and Alaskan Natives, mixed racial and ethnic heritage populations (Lassiter & Chang, 2006). The aforementioned authors described that ethnic, and culturally diverse populations pose the possibility of being at a higher risk for developing substance abuse related issues, making it imperative that substance abuse counselors take into account the specifics surrounding the increase of diverse populations within the United States. Conveying the logicality that substance abuse counselors have the prospect of engaging and treating these diverse populations, causes a need to administer effective treatment options that can be gained
My favorite example of cultural competence from the article is about the second grade teacher. The example is about the second grade teacher, she told her student to bring their favorite song to class. So, the student brings their favorite song to class, and one-by-one the student listens to their favorite song. However, the student had to identity the rhyming scheme, alliteration and onomatopoeia in their songs. I think this is a perfect example for cultural competence, because kids love listen to music, why not incorporates an item to help them to learn
There is a difference between cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and cultural competence. Cultural awareness is refers to the perception of principles from similarities and differences of cultures. Next, Cultural sensitivity is an understanding that you know traditional differences occur. Romance, betrayal, and greed are consistent themes in The Great Gatsby, but there is a pattern demonstrating how the past never changes over time. The majority of Fitzgeralds' themes are seen in today’s societies through worldwide wars, cyberbullying, and social stratification. This timeless novel also developed characters that readers either fell in love with or despised. Portrayed through the eyes of narrator Nick Carraway, it is extremely evident which characters can be categorized as admirable or despicable characters.
Over the past four months, this course has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had during my first year of college. Although I have always realized the importance of being culturally competent in daily life, specifically healthcare, I was unaware of the many ways that cultural competence can be obtained. This class gave me the opportunity to view situations from a different perspective, especially through the weekly discussion boards and peer responses. Learning from classmate can teach more valuable lessons than listening to boring lectures or reading hundreds of pages in a textbook because it is easier to relate to experience rather than hypothetical situations. For example, one of the discussion boards asked us to detail
(early childhood Australia, 2013) To grow in my cultural competence I will interact with different races and different cultures. By doing this I will learn how to be more knowledgeable and confident. This will then give me the ability to talk and understand others much better. If I become culturally competent then I will be able to accept diversity and to also understand the advantages of diversity and have the skill to honour differences.
