Abstract
This article will discuss current day plagiarism among college and universities in the world of the Internet in 2017. Plagiarism is illegal and is defined as either a direct or indirect copying of another person’s creative work. College students are at risk of plagiarizing when they create a paper or research report for a class. Not using a proper citation, the copying of statements or parts of a document are common ways that plagiarism can occur. Students that are found to be guilty of plagiarism can face many different types of consequences depending on the college or university policies (Kokemuller, 2017). The main difference is that the sources of information are no longer in the community library alone. Today’s information is at a students fingertips just by logging onto the Internet. There is a disconnect between what a student perceives as a plagiarism and what is just common knowledge posted online. “Now we have a whole generation of students who’ve grown up with information that just seems to be hanging out there in cyberspace and doesn’t seem to have an author,” said Teresa Fishman, director of the Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University. “It’s possible to believe this information is just out there for anyone to take.” (Tripp, …show more content…

Copyleaks is another free online tool that checks for plagiarism. It is free for the first 10 pages, but you must be a registered user to use it. It uses the cloud authentication platform that allows the user to track how eLearners content is used over the Internet. There are business and educational plans available.
The last online tool for checking for plagiarism that will be discussed is PaperRater. It is a multi-tool website that not only checks for plagiarism but also checks for spelling, grammar mistakes and it will proofread for different wording also. This tool will check up to 5 pages and does not have the ability to store reports. This is also available for a monthly or yearly subscription
