Current Practices: Article Analysis

Introduction Professionals who are experts in their fields write peer-reviewed articles or scholarly articles based on the research they have done in the field of their expertise.
The first article being compared is “Reflection Revisited: The Class Collage” written by Jeff Sommers from the Journal of Basic Writing. This scholarly article is about a college English professor who gives an assignment to his class about reflection. As the assignment progresses, he quickly realizes that the responses he had received from his students were not what he had imagined. The second article is called “Advertising to Children and Teens: Current Practices” written by Victoria Rideout and published by Common Sense Media. Each article has different ways to support the goals of the discourse community it belongs in. Different discourses have different goals as well as different ways to achieve each goal. For example a medical discourse is responsible for helping people where as a community of chef’s main priority is making good food. The “Advertising to Children and Teens: Current Practices” article contain a lot of citations and numbers. The business field is more number and data based so it is only right that this article is no different. Each section of the article contains at least one eyewitness reference supporting the section’s topic. For example, there is a section in the article about branded websites and the supporting data are from big name companies such as Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and McDonalds just to name a few. Bullet points are also spotted to name off lists within the sections. These bullets are used to further support the claims being made within the scholarly article. This article uses multiple sources of information and raw data to get its point across, which means this, is how the marketing/advertisement discourse achieves their …show more content…

This article mostly uses first hand knowledge and experiences by the author and his students to slowly get his point across. Only mentioning names when needing to, Sommers also briefly includes bits from multiple students’ reflection papers. This is most notably shown using block citation. Bullet points are used in this article just as much as the other. They are used in the same way with their purpose being to name off lists that the author uses to support their claim. The goal of the English discourse for this particular article is to show other professionals in the English field what Sommers has found. He also encourages others to try out his reflection assignment as indicated in his “What now”
