Social media sites such as Kik, Omegle, and YikYak all have one commonality; each of these sites allows its users to hide behind a username. Anonymity is what some people believe to be the main issue when it comes to Internet incivility. People believe that because their identity is unknown, they have the right to say whatever they want, no matter how harsh, provocative, or insulting the comment is. This Internet anonymity is creating issues for individuals of all ages, with repercussions intense as causing them to be fired from their job and ultimately ruining their lives. One possible view is that it does not affect people any differently than other forms of bullying; this view will be referenced as the Equal perspective. To further support this argument, “Cyberbulling Among Students is Serious, but It Is Not an Epidemic,” will be analyzed compared to the two other articles that reinforce the two other opposing views. One of those views, that will be referred to as the Mind perspective, is that Internet incivility only has an effect on the individual on a very personal level, only affecting their thoughts and mental health. Support from the article, “Cyberbullying Can Lead to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues,” will be examined to prove that Internet incivility only affects mental health. The final and most extreme perspective, which will be referred to as the Life perspective, is that Internet incivility not only affects the mental health of an individual, but it also has an effect on their career and relationships with others. For example, for one person who is a victim of cyber-bullying, they may have the ability to ignore the tormenting and carry ion with their daily lives. Whereas, other people, could be tremendously impacted by a single comment, triggering the results of the Mind perspective. The ambiguity of this perspective however, is its most significant weakness. Some individuals may be affected by Internet incivility and be experiencing the Mind perspective, without even knowing it. The individual could be feeling depressed or anxious and not know that it is the cyber bullying that has triggered these emotions.
