D Youville Panthers: A Short Story

233 Words1 Pages
David and his teammates celebrate following a ROPSAA championship win against the D’Youville Panthers. Centennial stadium. November 17, 2016. On the side of a hill perch 32 boys —big smiles on each of their faces. David notices the grass taints the all-white uniform. He doesn’t care. None of them do. Nothing else matters to him; not a math test, not an overdue religion assignment, and not a grass stain. The scoreboard overcasts a shadow over the whole team. David looks up and sees his father—who has never come to any of David’s other games—in the stands. He’s smiling. He’s proud. David’s shoulder pads press up against his neck and choke him—he’s not breathing much anyway. His hand is secure underneath the trophy. It’s light, almost flimsy.
