However, that does not mean I did not go through some sort of similar transformation. When I first came to this school I told myself that I was going to stick in my own lane and be this anti-social person. That did not last though as experiences here and even outside of my classroom experiences led to this type of change. Since the start of high school, I was this anxiety-riddled anti-social person. I had a very small group of friends and once I left high school for university that small group of friends dwindled drastically.
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.
In Susan Cain’s book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking she proves that introverts are vital to the world and everything typically thought of “the quiet ones” is wrong. She starts the book by introducing the idea of the introvert. This term is derived from psychologist Carl Jung who basically invented the personality test. When deciding on a name for different types of individuals, he called the more reserved people who gain their energy from being alone and are typically not very open introverts.
I consider myself both an introvert and shy, which is why I feel anxiety about opening up in class.
This is how Trevor Noah described feeling in the book Born A Crime. Trevor Noah in the book “As the Outsider, can retreat into a shell, be anonymous, and be invisible. Or you can go the other way. You protect yourself by opening up. You don’t ask to be accepted for everything you are, just the one part of yourself that you’re willing to share.”
Amy Tan seems like an introvert. An extrovert probably would’ve been fuming yelling at her parents while trying to explain to them how they were embarrassing her. In the passage, Amy doesn’t tell her parents how embarrassed she was, in fact, it goes as far as to tell the reader,”I was stunned into silence for the rest of the night.” These traits show that she thinks before she act and are key in revealing that she is an introvert. Amy is a sensor.
Growing up, I was never afraid of being myself. I have a very large family, so I knew how to socialize very well at a young age. Socializing is a huge part of who I am, and it’s a part of my life I will always enjoy. I love meeting new people, because people always differ from one another. I respect the diversity of someone’s culture and background.
In school I wasn’t exactly a loner, but I didn’t exactly fit in either. I had people to talk to but they wouldn’t stay for a long time, at least not long enough to be considered friends. Instead of having plenty of friends and getting in trouble for being too rowdy in the lunchroom, I was the Asian girl who fit the stereotype of being smart. The people who would come up to me usually only came to ask for help on classwork and I was too shy to approach other people due to being insecure. So to say my social and communication skills were bad was an understatement.
Extroverts will likely recognize the behavior described in their friends and family, and be reminded that while extroversion certainly has much to offer, so does introversion. Fitting in has always been difficult for me which is why I have always had a difficult time getting to meet new people. Whether it 's in a new college, high school, middle school, elementary school, church school, soccer team, etc., I always seem to be the “quiet” one of the bunch and it never fails to draw people 's attention. I believe I was shy and not very talkative because of my height, my teeth (before I had braces), and because of my past speech issues, to name a few, but most of this has changed ever since. I no longer have crooked teeth or a stutter in my speech and I am now able to speak to a large group of people without getting nervous or scared, or so I thought. Moving from Victorville to Riverside taught me that the people you once called friends can leave you in a heartbeat just because you moved 52 miles away from them.
In our modern society, confident and assertive individuals seem to be favored over the shy and solitary introverts. The society refers introverts as anti-social, tedious, solitary, aloof and give countless negative nametags and they create stereotypes to extroverts. Yet, just because introverts are shy and quiet, that does not always define that non-introverts are superior than introverts.
