In 1864, a cheese factory opened at Ladoga in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. This factory, opened by Chester Hazen, set the groundwork for Wisconsin to become "America's Dairyland". As of 2015, Wisconsin had around 9,900 dairy farms. Without Hazen, Wisconsin may never have become one of the nation's dairy leaders. Therefore, this historical event is very important to what Wisconsin is and who Wisconsinites
Farm technology made a lot of progress from 1890-1920. Before this time, all the farming was done by hand. There were many inventions from wire to tractors to help make farming easier. Three inventions that really changed farming were gas tractors, cream separator and horse drawn combine. Gas tractors were created so that you didn’t have to use your horses so much and so you could pull more.

These changes had far-reaching effects on farmers across the country, who were forced to adapt to new challenges and opportunities. During the period of 1865-1900, technology advancements revolutionized the agricultural industry in America, leading to increased efficiency in transportation and processing of agricultural products. As evidenced in document F, it describes the establishment in Chicago that combined the operations of shipping and canning beef, the slaughtering capacity of 400,000 head annually showcased immense
In the 1890’s, the United States began to act like a great power. At that time, it had passed a period of crisis; the civil war, industrialization, immigration and the aftermath of the Reconstruction era added to anxiety of its economic crisis. Imperialism was called upon to aid in this crisis because it would create a system of foreign relations based on the exchange of goods, but it did so without understanding the consequences of its actions. One way the exchange of goods was used in creating foreign relations was through corporations. Corporations at the time went abroad to look for resources that the continental United States did not have, such as bananas and coffee.
Food brings people together and it plays a major role in Southern culture. This is evident in Harper Lee’s Southern novel, To Kill A Mockingbird which is set during the Great Depression. Food is a main ingredient throughout the novel helping to move the plot along and teach lessons. Samuel Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, said it best, “Food is essential to life, therefore make it good”. Every region of the United States has distinct dishes, but the South gets the blue ribbon award for the best food.
Abraham Lincoln’s purpose for the establishment of the Gettysburg Address was to win the Civil War and push America forward. Lincoln emphasizes the ideal of his purpose to motivate the readers on continuing fighting. During the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century in Canada, a large shift occurred in the dairying industry. Dairying was traditionally domestic work performed by women in the family until men overtook the industry. Many factors led to men involving themselves in the dairy industry. During the nineteenth and twentieth century, Canada was going through their industrial revolution, changing many farm practices into factory work, leading to a much more efficient, cost-effective, and less-skilled manner. The government subsidies that resulted in men investing into this industry was another contributing factor leading to the displacement of women.
The exchange of livestock also played a crucial role in the economy of Western Europe. The introduction of livestock such as horses, cattle, and pigs from the New World provided a new source of meat and dairy products for European consumers. Additionally, the introduction of horses had a profound impact on transportation, agriculture, and warfare. Horses became an essential part of European society, and they were used extensively for transportation and plowing fields. The Columbian Exchange also introduced new natural resources to Western Europe, particularly in the form of precious metals.
Intro: When people eat food they do not think about what is in it, or how it is made. The only thing people care about is what the food tastes like and how much they get. During the 1900’s the meat packing industry had not regulations of any kind. All that mattered to the industry was that they made as much money as possible with as little expenditure as possible. During this times people were often made sick and died either from working conditions or poor food quality.
In the 1800s, it was hard to farm because of all the livestock free roaming, and eating the farmers crops. Also, all of the ranchers just let their cattle roam, and graze where they pleased. The 1920s were marked by an increase in consumerism due to a booming economy post-World War I (CrashCourse, 2013), the increasing popularity of consumer debt (CrashCourse, 2013) and an increase in the mass production of consumer goods (Osburn, n.d.). Coupled with technological advances, families now had access to mass media (in the form of the radio and television) and modern conveniences, such as household appliances and automobiles. Radio and television broadcasts helped to build a mass culture, where consumers were watching, listening, purchasing and emulating the same things across the nation (Osburn, n.d.). Women’s suffrage granted women the right to vote; some women took this new found voting freedom as license to break from traditional female roles in other areas and began dressing and
Common dishes; foods eaten; cooking techniques and cooking equipment: Even though Italy has been known for foods such as pizza, pasta, and tomato sauce, the national diet of Italians is different in every region. Before the mixing of cooking styles in the different regions, you could tell what region the food you were eating was from because of the regions’ usage of fat. The type of fat mostly used in the northern region was butter, Italians ate pork fat in the region in the middle of Italy, and the type of fat eaten in the south was olive oil. Some types of meals in the northern part of Italy were rice and polenta. In the south, pasta was a very well known food.
Unit 2 – Historical Perspective of Food The second unit we learned about the history of Agriculture, both in Canada and around the world. Agriculture allowed groups to rely less on hunting and gathering and allowed communities to prosper and grow, having a more reliable source of food, increasing food security and quality of life.
