When most people say that their middle name is dangerous, they are joking, but not Maisie. Her middle name really is Dangerous. In Dangerous by Shannon Hale, Maisie Danger Brown is a smart girl who was born without an arm, and lives a normal life. All of that changes one day. Maisie is no longer just Maisie; she is La Peligrosa: Danger Girl. With the fate of the world resting on the shoulders of her and four complete strangers, Maisie must make heartbreaking decisions that could cost the lives of herself and others. She becomes smart, brave, and dangerous beyond what was possible. Maisie becomes extremely smart because at the Howell Space Academy, she is accidently inserted with technological nanites. These nanites give her the ability to design extreme technological advances. Towards the end of the book, Maisie designs a jet pack that allows her to fly into the atmosphere. Maisie is proven dangerous when she confronts a group of men saying, "If you hurt my dad, I will tear your heads from your bodies. Emphasis on tear. None of you will have mercy from me. But leave us right now and I won't follow" (217). Threatening to mortally injure someone like that and having the ability to follow through with it shows just how dangerous she actually is. Equally important is when she threatens to kill Dr. Howell. Maisie tells Dr. Howell that she will kill her if her parents aren't protected and Dr. Howell says, "Is she going to kill me or not, Dragon?" (276). Again, threatening to kill someone with a lot of influence and money and willing to follow through on it shows how dangerous Maisie really can be. Most importantly, one way we know she is dangerous is because she is called La Peligrosa--which means Danger Girl in Spanish--on multiple occasions.
