Sally Wang Professor Nash History 1301 13 October 2014 Concept of War Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels recounts the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of key leaders from both the north and the south. Shaara provides insight into the thoughts and decisions that were made that would inevitably determine the outcome of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The northern concept of war that they were fighting for the sake of freedom and to restore the union by taking in prisoners and preserving he high grounds at Gettysburg helped them force the Confederates to retreat.
The book first copyrighted in 1974 by Michael Shaara is “The Killer Angels”. This book is a historical fiction book and takes place in Gettysburg in 1863. The story starts on June 29, 1863, the four main characters that we see the most are General Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, and Major General John Buford. The book changes it’s point of views between these four men to get different perspectives of what is going on from June 29th to July 3rd of 1863. It all starts with a spy showing up and informing Longstreet that he saw the Union army moving nearby, this information shocked him because General Stuart was supposed to be on the lookout for the Union.
The Killer Angels follows the three day long, decisive battle of Gettysburg during the United States Civil War. The book’s storytelling is purely chronological, as the story progresses our perspective is flip flopped between the Union and Confederate sides of the battle, however the story is consistently told in the 3rd person. Michael Shaara uses immense details when describing this battle and does an incredible job of describing every character and scene, making everything easy to visualize and allowing you to put yourself in the story. The story reveals to us the thought process of all the seemingly fearless military leaders, as they discuss battle strategies and how to outsmart their opponent. In part six, I thought there was a lot of good information spread out in all of the chapters. The biggest thing that stood out to me were in chapter 25. I enjoyed the first sections that were expressed. I enjoyed the idea about how Jesus recruits heroes to join him in critiquing theocapitalism. I think this means that he reaches out to people who are going to attempt to make the kingdom grow.

The novel begins on the date of July 1, 1863, during the time of the Civil War where the Confederate army, and the Union army, fought the most substantial sized battle of the American Civil War. In my research based outside of the book, I discovered that several of the characters in the novel are based on real historical figures. Those characters include, General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate army; General James Longstreet, Lee’s second in command; and Union Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, who participated in one of the most famous segments of the Battle of Gettysburg,
The book that I am reading for my summer reading is Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. This book is about soldiers who are fighting in the Vietnam War. The book focuses around the main protagonist Richard Perry and is in first person through Perry’s perspective of the war. Perry’s life is different compared to mine for instance Perry is the age 17, he has a single mother and younger brother he is having to support by joining the army while just finishing high school. While I have both my parents and a sister, and I do not have to support my family., and just starting high school.
From the book I have learned the history of the KKK, other knight groups, their way of living, and their way of thinking. I have also learned how somebody can be a regular old citizen in our community, but is a part of a hate group and believes that Blacks, Latinos, Asians, people from the LGBT community, and Jews are the enemy. Not only are these groups are more than relevant all over the country, but there are young children who will keep these groups alive. The children will be corrupted into thinking that racial hate is normal way to think and will follow the footsteps into their parents. This book very much shows how the Neo-Nazis, racist skinheads, white nationalist, and other groups want a white dominated nation.
People are hesitant to stand up for what they believe in, including Islam not being a religion of terrorists. Persecution ensues when common held beliefs are questioned. It takes a lot to change a misguided belief, especially if it is held by so many people. In Salem, too many people had to die before injustice was fully realized. In the United States, the population is very far away from realizing Muslims and terrorists are nowhere near the same thing.
Religion itself is not the issue, it is the people who interpret it falsely to gain political and cultural benefits that serve as the issue. On the news, it is common to hear about new plots and tragedy brought about by terrorists and their organizations. Terrorists take religious practice seriously. For when a nation or person threatens their religion, it could result in the death of innocent people and could possibly take their own lives in the act. One of the most recent incident of terrorism was toward a French magazine office that had published a satirical, yet controversial, image of Muhammad, which triggered a terrorist attack among the office in order to bring justice to the terrorist's god.
In chapter 3 of A Rumor of Angels by Peter Berger he discusses five major signals of transcendence. The signal of transcendence I want to focus on is humor. The way Berger discusses humor is that it is necessary for being human. It’s my opinion that humor, laughter and joy add to life and make it more enjoyable. Berger defines humor as “an intrinsically human trait”
Religion is part of the human history and it will always be a part of it. Even though many know that religion is part of history a lot of person avoid religion like if it was a sickness and they want nothing to do with it. Nevertheless, whether terrorism has a religion or not is definitely not what I am here to write about. Discrimination in any shape or form should not be tolerated, it must be stopped. Islamophobia has severely increased discrimination in our world; likewise, biased views against not only Muslims but also non-Muslims are becoming a norm nowadays. You might ask how? Well, due to the unbelievable indoctrination of our people through social media and politics, anyone who looks like they are from the Middle East and has a beard, is a terrorist.
The Atrocity A boring plot, a pathetic ending, a gay couple. I believe you should not read this book if: you value your faith, or enjoy intelligent novels. I believe if a person chooses to neglect their faith or intelligence they have abandoned some of the most basic values of human life. Without knowledge or faith our world would be thrust into darkness, because at the root of our society we all rely on our faith or knowledge or possibly both.
Religious groups have had vey bad effects on society; they caused a lot of harm to people and property. Firstly they cause death, injury and might even people for life. Some people would even get traumatized as a result of havocs caused by religious bodies. These people kill people a lot. For example a great number of people were killed in Nigeria when Boko Haram bombed the mosque one Friday.
War on Religion There is a belief among people that declares religion as the main cause of wars worldwide, and it has been the main cause of violence throughout the history of humanity. While we cannot deny that, some battles such as the crusades and the Lebanese civil war were based on religious faith, it is totally illogical to consider religion as the main cause of wars. Moreover, although there is also no disagreement that some extremist in Islam were behind 9/11, it is considered a misjudgment to say that all individuals in this religion convey the concept of violence and cruelty. The fact is non-religious incentives take the responsibility for almost all of humans’ wars. Lives lost during religious wars are nothing compared to those lost during non-religious wars.so why people believe that religion is the cause of wars, why they are wrong and do the extremist represent religions?
