This book is about a boy named Danny who loves to play basketball. Danny is 12 years old but he is very short so some people think he is younger. He is trying out for the 12 year old basketball team. He has made the team every year until now. Danny does not make the basketball team and he is very disappointed. When he is with his mom he tries not to tell her about it but he ends up crying in front of her about it. He feels embarrassed that he cried in front of his mom. “I am going to try harder to make them Danny has a lot of problems he has to deal with. When he arrives Danny is in the parking lot playing basketball. Danny tells his dad about not making the team and how he did so good the 1st day of try outs but not the 2nd. When his dad gets there he is playing basketball, he tells him about not making the team so his dad decides to help him with his basketball skills. His dad gives him advice like “You need to work on your shot.” Most of the story takes place in Danny’s driveway where they practice basketball. In the driveway is dad teaches him the fundementals of basketball. When his dad was Danny’s age he led the 12 year old basketball team to the national finals. The story was all over ESPN and other national news stations. He tells Danny things like “I don’t like to remember the old days.” The story is only told from Danny’s point of view so it would be in first person. He explains about how he feels about a lot of things. For example he explains how he is disappointed that his dad didn’t get to tell him about the stories from when he played basketball. Ever since the day that they told him that he didn’t make the team he has been working out and doing basketball drills all day long. After about two weeks of improving his basketball skills he thinks he is ready to go prove he is worthy of being on the team. He heads to the gym where the team practices. The coach sees him walk in and asked “what are you doing here?” and he replies “I came to show you I am good enough for the team. He shows the coach all the new stuff he has learned and the coach seems very impressed. The coach tells Danny that he made a mistake not letting him on the team the first time and that one of the players just quit so there is a spot open.
