The novel, “Darius the Great is not Okay” does not reflect my own experiences for three reasons. Firstly I have been fortunate enough to have many friends unlike Darius who only had a handful of people he could talk to. Secondly Darius has gone through many things which I have not experienced like facing depression at a young age; that is just something I cannot relate to. Lastly, the discrimination he faced throughout the story is something I have not experienced or seem much of. It can be seen throughout the book that Darius really had no one to talk to except a few close people. He had no friends to open up to, to hang out with, so he faced isolation. Sohrab was his only friend. I am fortunate enough to not have experienced this and have friends I can talk to andhang out with. Darius’s experience is alien towards me. Many people are socially awkward but I believe that's not what was holding Darius back; Darius can talk to people just fine but he can’t connect with them as you can see during his time at school. However with his best friend Sohrab I think he just Instinctively knew they would become great friends, Darius doesn’t have a connection on a similar level with anyone except him and his family. “‘You can know things without them being said out loud. I knew Sohrab and I were going to be friends for life. Sometimes you can just tell that kind of thing.”(Khorram,132) It has been stated numerous times throughout that Darius has faced mental health issues and suffers from depression. Although he said that there was no specific reason he was there had to be a trigger or something that pushed him in that direction. Experiences really change and shape a person, in all my experiences I have never found a reason to push me in that direction so I cannot connect or relate to
