Short Story
Darkness. Pitch black. Nothing can be seen but emptiness. Suddenly a blinding crevasse of light is the only thing that is in vision, and it is miniscule. The light seems to be growing by the smallest measurements. The great dark pit was lost and now everything was blurry. Nothing was defined but a beam of light. Slowly, everything began to focus. Little by little, time seemed to be flying by before I could see something. My head was trembling as it ached. My fingers felt like needles were jabbing into them. My fingers gave way. My hurting head imagined hit the hard floor, but i was really falling through the air. The wind pounding on my neck made it feel like my head was going to shatter. I heard a strange sound. As if someone or something was talking to me, but it was muffled. I began hearing more and more defined words. I began to be able to make out where I was. I was rocking back and forth my head still ached. I heard what the voice was saying. A strange man said to me, are you alright, I found you floating in the ocean. You had a badly bruised neck and a broken arm in two places. Gee, you young man took a beating. I tried to respond but my throat was dry. I motioned a signal to the man and clued him i needed some water. He walked away but something caught my eye. He had a leg that must have been paralyzed because it did not move and he used a crutch. He came back with what i had desired, a glass of water. I drank and the slightly cold water soothed my throat. I told him thank you now that i could speak. I said to him, what is your name. Lenard Jenkins, thats my name. I asked him what had happened to his leg. He said well, the year was 1942, I was 23, and the United States needed more soldiers to help in the war. I joined and once done with training, i went to the battlefield. The hardest part was leaving my wife and my 3 year old daughter behind. My first day in the field, i stepped on a landmine. I was brought to the doctors, they did all they could, but told i would never be able to use that leg
