In the poem “Casey at Bat” and story “David and Goliath,” a comparison of David and Casey shows differences and similarities.
The first similarity between the two are that they both have a fixed mindset on how they are going to perform. This is elucidated because Casey waited until he felt that it was the right time to swing and when he felt that there was a perfect pitch. David that he could beat Goliath, because he had faith in God. In the story “David and Goliath”, the text says “Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way, and I can kill this worthless philistine. He shouldn’t have made fun of the army of the living god!” In “Casey at the Bat” the text says, “close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped- “that ain’t my style,” said Casey. “Strike one,” the umpire said.”
Another similarity between Casey and David is that they both listen to people with a positive or negative opinion on them. In “David and Goliath”, the text shows this, “You don’t have a chance against him,” Saul replied. “You’re only a boy and he’s been a soldier all his life.” In “Casey at the Bat”, the text shows “five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.” They back up the explanation that was found. …show more content…

Casey was faced with the pressure of winning the game for his team who was behind. David was faced with pressure to take down Goliath the Giant. In “Casey at the Bat”, the text says “they thought, if only Casey could get but a wack at that- we’d put up even money, now, with Casey at the Bat.” This shows how the crowd thought that Casey would for sure win the game, which put pressure on him.
