David Berkowitz “Son of Sam David Berkowitz When the word serial killer is spoken people listen carefully. The word sparks an interest in the general public because murdering an individual should not be a common thought in a person 's head. Questions begin to be asked. David Berkowitz also known as the “Son of Sam” is a famous serial killer that raised many questions in the city of New York, year 1976-77. He is one of the most notorious serial killers in America, murdering six people and injuring seven. New York city turned into a panic asking questions such as; what David’s motives were, what his childhood was like and if there were any mental issues. This disease had helped motivate his murders in multiple ways. Schizophrenia is where the person has delusions that someone or something is plotting against them. They can also experience auditory hallucinations, hearing things that are not concrete. A belief that there are powerful beings is also common in people with Paranoid Schizophrenia. They will spend excessive amounts of time planning how to protect themselves from others. Berkowitz was clearly delusional in terms of his neighbour’s dog being the devil. At the poor mental state he was at his efforts to protect himself from the devil were to obey auditory delusions to kill women. His perspective on life has changed and has now been converted to christianity after having a spiritual self awakening while laying in his cell. He is also not taking any more medication for any psychological issues. David expresses deep remorse for the horrible crimes of his youth, including his numerous murders and many acts of arson. David wishes that he could undo all the harm he has done to others but knows that he cannot. He would like to be forgiven by others, but understands and accepts that many people, especially the families of his victims, will never accept his apologies. David has worked tirelessly with mentally and emotionally challenged inmates trying to influence them to change for the better such as he did. He is considered a model prisoner by authorities and the other inmates call him Brother Dave. To conclude David Berkowitz is now a god loving genuine person who wants nothing but the best for everyone. He had, had that potential to be that person all along. If only he were to have been guided in the direction of positivity and religion. There is also a inference that if David were to be treated with the medication that he needed his schizophrenia would not have been as bad as it was to make him feel trapped to the point where killing was his only way
