While looking at our district’s internal postings, I learned of the open teaching positions at White Bear Lake Area Schools. These positions are of great interest to me because White Bear Lake Area Schools has earned a positive reputation for student achievement and community involvement. Our mission to ensure students develop a love for learning, excel academically, are inspired to realize their dreams, and become engaged citizens with a global understanding by challenging each student with a dynamic, respectful, and inclusive environment that nurtures the unique talents and abilities of every student is something I firmly agree with. As a member of the kindergarten teaching team at Otter Lake Elementary, I am able to establish a positive and personal relationship with each student in order to provide the emotional and social support necessary for learning. My goal for this support is to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Allow me to introduce myself, I am Bryan Le, a freshman that is currently attending a charter school by the name of “Downtown College Prep”. I am currently living with my parents and two younger siblings, one brother and one sister. Over my years in a public elementary school, I had seen others being happy because of one’s help and that made me feel happy inside. I then thought of ways to help others when I stumbled upon the fact that doctors help people everyday, which seemed as a great way to help many people so that they may continue to be happy in life. As I entered Downtown College Prep, I was urged by the staff to explore my options and to set a goal in life.

Although, I have done various volunteer activities and work one in particular that has truly changed my life was Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem focuses on a demographic that normally goes over looked, their mission is to help children whose parents’ have been affected by cancer. When I signed up to volunteer as a counselor I was unaware I was becoming involved with something bigger than myself. The imprint the children left on me is something I would never want to erase, they taught me love and empathy on a whole new spectrum. Becoming a part of this program as teacher will give me the opportunity to share this gift with my students and host community.

I learned how to adapt to the individual needs of students to provide them the best education. Like students with a communication disorder, many of my students would shy away from activities or tasks because of obstacles. Through these experiences, I watched my students gain the confidence to participate in activities and excel in academics to become successful individuals. As a future Speech Language Pathologist, many qualities that I possess can be improved by furthering my education.
The desire for equal opportunities fuels my ambitions to be a school counselor. Despite all of our differences as people in America, what we all have in common is the fact that schooling of some sort is a requirement. Working as a school counselor will provide me with the opportunity to be an ally to students, while on the frontlines to combating issues that adversely impact
2016 was definitely a year for the books and a rollercoaster of an experience as a member of both my Painesville and Cornell communities. Nonetheless, each moment served as an opportunity for growth and, in the end, 2016 was the year where I grew the most as both a person and a student. That being said, 2017 is a year that can present even further growth opportunities in my path. In 2017, I will push myself to be the best David I can be in order to improve on myself, my family, friends and community relationships. By challenging myself to do better this year I hope to both inspire and be inspired by the people I surround myself with so that we can all get one step closer to inspiring and empowering the world beyond Cornell.
