Experience Of Volunteering

I have been a member of the United States Air Force for six years, and over the course of my enlistment, I have volunteered an average of two times per year. Volunteering is totally optional in the military, but required to stand out among your peers. Volunteering was a great way to develop my professionalism and personality. Recently I personally set up an event with the local community that not only involved cultural integration but strengthened myself as a leader. Dealing with different cultures and having a language barrier can be difficult sometimes.

I’ve seen and experienced bad leadership but those are the ones you learn the most from. Thankfully, the supervisors I’ve had while serving the military have greatly influenced my definition of leadership. I’m glad I had the opportunity to set up my event because volunteering is one of the most charitable activities of our time. This event has given me exposure to new opportunities and accelerated my growth as a leader. Getting this event going was quite difficult, seeing as it’s never been done from my military base before. That’s what makes it so unique and makes me stand out among my peers. The students that were in the classroom will remember this moment every time they speak English. From doing this event, I gave others the understanding of how a simple idea can protrude as a great outcome. Later down the road, I will be able to share my experience with others to help promote how volunteering can be a positive experience.

Setting up this event I helped other appreciate the culture and expanded my role as a leader. No one knows how other cultures live unless they research it or experience it first-hand. I set up my co-workers and local Italians to collaborate in a positive way by providing this volunteer opportunity.
