Why I Volunteer At Matt Talbot Kitchen And Outreach

One day after seeing pictures of poor people, I asked myself, “What can I do for others?” I knew to be successful or to be remembered positively in life I should serve others. What does that mean? To me it means that I serve others in my community that need my help, and I should volunteer to help out the poor. I have learned many life lessons from serving the poor at Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach, an organization that provides food and counseling to the needy in our community. I also learned how to be a leader by leading a group of young teenagers at Sky Kamp. A catholic youth camp that teaches kids about their faith and how to have fun at the same time. I felt the need to help these people more. When I saw the smiles on the faces of the people I served, who were really polite, it surprised me. These people are thankful for any food they get and I realize how lucky I am. Serving at Matt Talbot taught me to care for the need of others with a friendly smile and service from myself, as well as others. Many people may wonder what they can do to help others, but to me it is simple: ask to volunteer and serve one’s community to not only help yourself, but many people in your community as well. Serving others not only gave myself a feeling of gratification, it gave me a piece of mind to want to continue to help my community. With this learning experience I will be able to know what it is like to do good for others. I have loved the experience of seeing others smile, and appreciate something I have done for them. When I lead others at Sky Kamp, for example, I found in these young teenagers humor and an excitement to learn. Some were different from others, most of them were shy, but the young teenagers that knew each other were more outgoing. The students I had a camp were well behaved, and they all seemed to have a great deal of fun learning new things about each other. I led these teenagers and may never see them again, but the impact I had on their lives is something that I hope they will remember
