I volunteered through an organization called Feeding Many. As a volunteer, we planted community gardens where the food produced is donated for those struggling to afford their daily needs. In preparation for joining the NHS, I was an active member of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and accrued over 70 hours of volunteer time during my tenure. As a middle school student I volunteered as a leader for WEB (Where Everybody Belongs). WEB is a program that assigns a responsible leader/mentor for a group of incoming sixth graders to help them acclimate to their first year of middle school.

A volunteer experience of mine that comes to mind is one that is probably my most favorite volunteer experience yet. It is one that I get to do at my very own school called DUCK Week (Doing Unselfish Charities for Kids), which is a week long event that I have been a part of since I joined Piedmont Schools as a second grader. What makes this charity unique is that it focuses only on a member or a few members in our very own community, which is why we are able to be so successful with it. It is easier for someone to understand the need to help when it is someone that they may know. This small town in Oklahoma rallies around community members and together we raise funds to help those in need.

I also helped run our school carnival and class booths. My suggestions that were used were the bottle flipping race and treasure hunt. As part of my responsibilities as class representative, I was responsible for getting supplies, setting up and taking down the game, and running the game when students came to play. I am a very good student, I have always earned 4’s and 5’s in every class, social skills, and work habits. I was also involved in a program called women in history at my school.
It also enables anybody to have that long-lasting and significant impact on society. Providing volunteer services gives me the opportunity to help someone in need while also advancing my life skills and wisdom. I like participating in community service because it is really fulfilling for anyone who gives back to their community. As I learn how it teaches me compassion and understanding, I also think it's crucial. This is a pillar that I consider to be of utmost importance.
In addition, it has been influential to my life. Service does not just benefit the person doing the task, but it also impacts the individuals receiving the aid. Several people may not know it, but serving is something that can be done every day. I have shown qualities of service through school activities and my community. For instance, participating in Key Club and my church youth group for many years has kept me involved in serving.
For example, in middle school, I was a member of NJHS. Through NJHS, I helped out with various different service projects that helped those in need. As well, in the past I have volunteered to help sort books for the Ridge Meadows Library and assist the librarians, spending an hour or two a week at Ridge Meadows after school for a few months. I have also volunteered numerous times at the Ridge Meadows Carnival, demonstrating both service and leadership because I am not only volunteering, but also taking charge of a group of kids at the carnival. I have also helped out both last year and this year by packing lunches for got your backpack, taking time away from my lunch in order to help others.
Finally, in my 5th grade year at LaPerche Elementary, I created an organization that helped soldiers. I worked with my 5th grade teacher to help spread the word. That was possibly my first ever type of community service. Now that I’m in high school I’ve moved onto bigger and more impactful services. I volunteer at a local bodega in my community. It may not seem like much but trust me, it is. I work at the bodega as a cashier and I work receiving no compensation.
I have volunteered at the Catholic Worker House preparing and serving food. I have also served food at the Salvation Army. I have volunteered at the Cedar Valley United Way, helping them with stuff around the office. Outside of school service I help my grandma, who has had a stroke. I'm always there to help her clean and get around the house.
I credit most to volunteering where it has inspired me to become a Lifeguard by indoctrinating me with the skills of courage, responsibility, and leadership. I acquired empathy when my mother took me to get my first haircut. I donated my hair to Locks of Love, an institution that creates wigs for people in ill-health. It made me feel good knowing I could do something to help others. From that moment on, I donated my time in various capacities.
In all, I can say that service learning has helped to shape me into a person that I am today and continues to makes me a better person.
