Daviess County is the community chosen for this community health assignment. Daviess County is located in the southwest region of Indiana. Several towns comprise Daviess County such as: Washington, Montgomery, Plainville, Elnora, Cannelburg, Alfordsville, Raglesville and Odon. Washington is the county seat of Daviess County, Indiana. Daviess County is located along the White River and has 6.2 square miles of water and land area of 431 square miles. Daviess County was named after the US District Attorney for Kentucky, Joseph Hamilton Daviess, in 1817 (Daviess County, Indiana (n.d.). As of July 1, 2014, the population of Daviess County was 31,654. The median household income is $47,104 with 13.8% of the county population living in poverty as calculated during the years 2010-2014. The cultural diversity of the community consist of 92.7% White, 1% African American, 0.4% American Indian, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, 0.9% Two or More Races and 4.6% Hispanic or Latino descent. The Women, Infant and Children (WIC) target nutritionally at risk, low income, pregnant, postpartum women, infants and children under 5 years old. They offer vouchers for healthy foods such as milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, canned or dry bean and peas and whole bread. Pamphlet, other health agency referrals and word of mouth is the main advertisement. Senior and Family Services offers an array of services in their facility from adult day care, bingo, bible study, fitness, crafts and so much more. They also provide in-home service such as homemaker services, attendant care service and respite services through the CHOICE program or private pay. Meals on Wheels provides hot nutritious meals once per day to those unable to prepare their meal or unable to shop for food. The agency charges for the meals but take donations for those unable to pay. Both the police and fire department aid in keeping the population of Washington safe. The fire departments speaks at schools and business regarding fire safety and exit plans. The police department also speaks to the schools to prevent drug use with the program DARE.
