Gain student attention/focus: Teacher shares with the students that she is afraid of heights. Then, she goes around the class and ask for students what they might be afraid of. Teacher reassures students a lot of people have at least 1 thing they are afraid of, but that there are some people who are afraid of nothing. Teachers announces that today, students are going to learn about an important man in US history who was afraid of nothing. That man was so brave that he became a legend and people wrote songs and stories to celebrate his courage. Teacher then tells the students that a song is going to be played and they will have to pay close attention to what the song says to find out the names and accomplishments of that man. Through this lesson, the students will learn about the accomplishment of Davy Crockett, and the impact of the battle of the Alamo On Texas gaining its independence from Mexico. Instructional Input/Modeling: Clear explanation of content being taught: Davy Crockett is an American legend. Unlike a lot of people who became a legend after their death, Davy Crockett was actually a legend during his life. His reputation was one of a courageous and patriotic man. He cared about his fellow settlers, was from humble origins and fought for his ideals and his country. He was not afraid to put his life at risk to defend what he believed to be right. By studying his life and his character, students will reflect on his accomplishments shaped his country, and how he influenced people around him such as the moral of his fellow soldiers, and how Crockett and Colonel Travis’s courage inspired the American settlers in Texas to fight for Texas’s independence.
