Number 8 started out as an all-white gang in Maryland Department of Corrections in the 90’s. Dead Man Inc is known for their violence and aggression against correctional staff and other inmates. They are the go-to contract killers for many other gangs, especially the Black Guerrilla Family. Dead Man Inc strives for power and recently entered the drug trafficking business. The Nazi Low Riders occupy the 7th spot on the list. Centered in California, over a 1,000 members are watched by authorities since they have a tendency for violence against other inmates and correctional staff. This gang formed in retaliation of the oppression by the Mexican Mafia. All members must Hispanic. The La Nuestra Familia is known for the drug dealing and sex trade in prisons. On the outside, they are contract killers and have various smuggling operations. The process to become part of the gang is extensive and takes about two years to show your loyalty. Due to this, most of the members are people that are locked up for severe crimes, such as murder. This makes the gang a serious contender in prison gang lethality. If the administration did not keep an eye them, prison gangs would be able to expand and eat away everything the correctional system is trying to do: rehabilitate offenders. In response to the gang situation, the correctional system has set up intelligence units to track and observe prison gang movements. They then have methods to help gang members get out of their life long contract. These methods are referred to as “deganging.” Deganging helps educate and coax gang members to straighten out their lives by renouncing their membership. The first step in deganging is to identify the players. By identifying which gangs are in which prisons, the correctional system can segregate members and transfer them to different parts of the country, breaking up the chain of command. After this, they try and keep the members busy through work assignments. This way, they won’t have time to deal with their smuggled drug empire. Another method is through restricting any displays of gang paraphernalia or symbols. Many gang members already have tattoos to represent their gang, therefore, in some prisons, they offer tattoo removals.
