Statement of Purpose
The Decisive Moment
It may be difficult for me to distinguish whether vision is a portrayal of reality or a dream; but I am sure that "The Decisive Moments" of my life are virtually and closely related to it. I was born and raised in a remote city of China, and resources were limited throughout my childhood. It was the dynamic images on television that enlightened my imagination of the outside world. I started to take photographs around my hometown using my father’s obsolete film camera when I was ten. Walking in the streets, what I heard most often was not “Look at that pretty girl!” but “See that guy holding a camera!” I kept linking the colorful world with my black eyes, passing through the hustle and bustle with the

This new job provided me a multitude of interviewing opportunities overseas, which had greatly broadened my horizon and developed the ability to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. I had been independently responsible for reportage in EXPO 2010, World Economic Forum 2011, Boao Forum for Asia 2011, and London Olympics 2012, and made docudramas in more than 10 countries including Japan, Australia, Myanmar and etc. At the same time, I got interested in Visual Anthropology and traveled around most part of Tibetan areas of China. It is no exaggeration to say that vision is how I store personal memory and how I record social history.

Contemporary China is a complex of contradictions, among which the most representative combination is “Prosperity and Decline”. On one hand, with the popularity of digital equipment, a growing number of individuals engage in creating “vision”, which promotes the free expression of public opinions. Whereas, owing to the limited aesthetic and critical thinking, the really valuable information tends to be overwhelmed by massive images.
