A common appearance of living in poverty is that they have few real choices to make. Without a doubt, people who only eat $5.00 a day, work as hard as they can, which can be particularly hard, because during this week I felt underfed and weak and received barely enough to cover my basic needs, which I tried to fulfill in the least expensive way. It seems that poverty lines were initially set to capture the definition of poverty by the budget needed to buy a certain amount of calories, plus some other necessary purchases, such as housing. A “poor” person can essentially be defined as someone without enough to eat. Foremost, my opinion of eating out is just that “out of the question”, even the thought of buying a McDonald's dollar menu is just too costly, and not to mention not satisfying enough. So I eat in, having no other choice! But what do I eat, and how well. First, I am very fortunate to own my own bread machine, I doubt that most individuals collecting food stamps or who are homeless have one! I am able to get the cost of a loaf of bread down to $0.70. I was able to pick up on sale at .99 cents store which I rarely shop at, cans of Tuna for $0.88, so tuna sandwiches will be a basis of my $5.00 a day diet, and the point here being when one lives on $5.00 a day for food, one has very little choice of what one eats, one needs to also cut coupons and buy what is on sale and when you get a great bargain like cans of tuna for $0.88 one tries to stock up, but that means one will be eating a lot of tuna and have very little selection in one's
