In this memo, I will introduce myself with my major, some of my background, why I am taking the English 341 course, and what I hope to get out of taking this course. In the Spring of 2012, I was admitted and enrolled in NMT for the study of physics with the astrophysics option. Recently, last semester, I dropped the astrophysics option and am now a general physics major primarily due to funding issues with the GI Bill. Prior to beginning my time at NMT, I served for nine years in the U.S. Army.
Growing Student Walking into Composition I, I really did not know what to expect. Since learning to do essay papers, from the start I hated them. I was so intimidated by them, I hated writing. I was never comfortable conducting an essay paper.
Why Comp I is So Valuable I believe that there are several reasons why Composition I is a valuable course for college students to take. Some of the reasons Comp I is so valuable are 1) it improves your writing skills, 2) it teaches us the different types of writing, and most importantly 3) it teaches us to manage our time wisely and effectively. Without the course Comp I, I believe that students wouldn’t be prepared or as prepared to take on the real world. Writing skills are something that most people don’t just have.
I struggled to get used to this writing process, especially with MLA format, since I never used it professionally as I did in this class. The summary essay was quite simple and straightforward, which is also something that I enjoyed. The research argument essay was also a bit of a challenge, but I felt like I did a well-done job. I liked that I was able to talk about a subject I enjoyed, and learn also how to properly use citing within my essays. Furthermore, although there were some challenges and some ups and downs within the essays, I did learn a lot about how to properly write.
Having my high school at the AP program established under SCNU was always one of my luckiest things happened to me. At here, I was trained to be priorly familiar with the U.S. education system and successful after coming to the U.S. where all the students were supposed to go. In order to be prepared, I was trained to write different kinds of essays, including laboratory report, social science research paper and literature expository writing. I have started to write all these kinds of essays since grade 10, and every writing assignment has gone through the process of outlining, drafting, peer proofreading and editing. At college, my writing style hasn’t really changed, yet, the way I write an essay has changed.
Reminiscing to elementary school, I remember having to write my essays in cursive and putting forth my best effort to make them as neat as possible, once we got the opportunity to go to the library to type an essay we waited half the class for the computers to just turn on. Once the
Writing an essay is not easy, at least for me. It takes time to develop a sophisticated piece of work that people will want to read more and more of. Ideas need to be written thoughtfully and sources need to be incorporated smoothly. Words need to have meanings to them, and sentences need to make sense. Now, I didn’t know how much I could learn in four months to make me a better reader and writer.
The Inspired vs The Real Writer by Sarah Allen’s main purpose was to try and change the way people view writers. They are seen as these all knowing articulating gods, when really, they are people too. They struggle just like everyone else, and any work worth reading had some stress and effort behind it. Allen stresses that just because someone is a writer, doesn’t mean they have always been good at it, or even liked it for that matter. All writers have experienced writer’s block.
Before coming to UCI, writing essays was definitely much easier. In school, the essays were usually about topics that were interesting and I usually had a lot of time to do them. For example, in my AP Literature class, we wrote essays about the books that we read but I love reading classical books so the writing came easy to me. On top of that we were given two to three weeks to write an essay that had to be 2 pages max.
I find that I usually have more success when writing about something that I truly enjoy and struggle when talking about something I do not really care about. Both my parents were minimal to no help with writing
My feelings toward writing aren 't good nor bad. Writing is something i have had difficulty with in my past. I have no problem brainstorming ideas on what topics to write my assignments on, even if i am given a prompt, but I do have difficulty with sitting down and planning my work. I always find myself getting stuck. So I almost never take the time out to plan out my ideas i come up with.
Reflective Portfolio Letter Dear, Members of the First Year Writing Assessment Committee, In my past years of writing I have seen myself develop into a well disciplined and patient writer. However, I have seen myself significantly improve and mature as a writer over the past few months more than I have in the past four years. I view writing as an open doorway full of ideas, feelings, and thoughts weaved together simply for creating a masterpiece. Before entering college English 1010, high school students are conditioned to write required papers and assignments without having the ability to “put you’re your own opinions and feelings in a paper.”
Writing is a vital part of life. Before the creation of written language human communication was limited to verbal, in-person conversations. Everything changed when writing allowed thoughts and ideas to travel farther and more efficient than ever before. Writing is a talent that we learn at an early age and only hone as we proceed through our academic careers. This being said, as with any talent every writer has strengths and weaknesses.
Gender is a socially devolped meaning of ladies and men .It is not the same as sex (traits of women and men) . Sex is dictated by the origination of assignments , capacities and parts credited to women and men in the public eye in broad daylight and private life . Gender as socially constructed category : Our conception of what women and men are and what they are supposed to be do is a product of the society in which we live . Thus many people say that gender is a "social construct".
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
