In life, people develop different kinds of friendships. Some last for a short time while others may last for years. Different people give the term friendship different meanings. As a relationship, friendship is something that people get to enjoy in life. Friends share many moments together. The moments create memories that each person may end up keeping for life. It is brutal to betray someone that is dear and to whom one means a lot. It is very hurtful for the victim and may result in resentment, bitterness and even hate in the most extreme cases. Betrayal can come in many forms and in different magnitudes. It may be revealing one’s secrets or even talking ill about somebody behind them. At times, it may be a gradual process while at times it is just one instance. Nevertheless, betrayal harms a friendship and may turn friends into foes. Personally, I have experienced a break up due to betrayal. I once had a friend that was dear to me. We shared our secrets and helped each other solve the problems we faced. We did many things together and created great memories. However, all that ended after about five years of friendship. He had moved to a new town and after about one year, I joined him. I went to his place because when I was moving out, he was the only person I could think of. At first, all went well. It was at a time when he was struggling financially and I chipped in to help pay the rent. However, he one day decided to move out and go live with one of his other friends. Although he knew I could not afford rent on my own, he left even without notice. He left me to struggle on my own. His actions hurt me so much as I felt he had betrayed my trust. The involvement of a third party can complicate a friendship to such an extent that it may not be possible for it to continue. Sometimes secrets “slip” and the third party becomes privy to the most intimate secrets of the two friends. It no longer becomes safe to share secrets. The shift in attention also has a toll on a friendship as one tries to alternate between the first friend and the third party. Lack of attention and unavailability may make one feel isolated and the friendship becomes strained. Sometimes, one friend may show dislike for the third party. The third person in the friendship may cause insecurity among the friends, as they become more and more suspicious of each other. Some third parties may even widen the rift by getting between the friends. That would be in saying things that would be hurtful to either of the friends. Sometimes it is lies and at other times it is the secrets they share. Where a third party interferes with a friendship in such a way, the friendship is likely to collapse. An instance of such interference by a third party in my life is where my friend went to live with his other friend and left me struggling on my own.
