The dictionary defines happiness as the state of being happy. We often ask ourselves what will make me happy. Some people tend to believe wealth or material things will make us happy. Others believe power and/or fame will make us happy. Yet others may believe that being healthy will make them happy, but happiness is a decision. Happiness is a state of mind or a mentality that a person carries. I believe that we are in control of our own happiness because we are the only ones in control of our thoughts and if we choose to carry around a positive mentality and look at the bright side of our situations, we will live in happiness.
For many people money, wealth, or material objects are what they strive for, believing that the more they have the happier they will be. As a result, many spend their lives, sometimes working long hours and neglecting their own health, in pursuit of wealth. However, if money was the source of happiness then we could prove that the more you had, the happier you would be. However, our own life experiences show us otherwise. The wealthiest are not the happiest and the poorest in turn are not the saddest. Furthermore, we tend to forget that money causes greed, selfishness, and corruption. For example, winning the lottery has affected and damaged many families in negative ways. Winning large amounts of money has made some of these families extremely unhappy, giving them more problems than they had before.
