The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. In life, there is a universal desire for oneness among people—we want to belong. It is why we collaborate, support common causes, cheer for sports teams, feel nationalism; it’s why we build villages, towns, and cities. Families are where we connect ourselves in relationships to past, current, and future generations. For many, family is not only a blessing, but our greatest accomplishment.

Here and there we hear people say the word family and talk about their family. Although family in the dictionary means “a group of individuals under one roof and usually under one head”, I strongly disagree. The real meaning of family to me is a close bond between a person or a group of people who help and stick with each other no matter the difficulties. In order to be a family, you don’t have to be related or live with each other. An example of a family in my life is my tennis team.

When it comes to what society deems as a family they may see it as your typical family: Dad, Mom, Kids and a Dog, basically whoever you live with. “Family” is a hard word to create a concrete definition for. If one were to ask three random people on the street, it is likely they will receive three completely different answers to defining a family. The textbook definition of family according to the etymology dictionary is: “Origin in early 15c. “servants of a household” from Latin familia “family servants, domestics collectively, the servants in a household.” The traditional dictionary describes family in a more narrow fashion stating, “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.”
The definition of family is the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children (Merriam, 2018). The definition of a friend is one attached to each other by affection or esteem (Merriam, 2018). The meaning of family and friends varies but for me it depends on the characteristic of a person. Just because someone is in your family doesn’t necessarily mean they hold the same amount of loyalty you would. And just because someone is your friend doesn’t mean they have the same intentions to be there long term and not temporary.

Family is characterized with common aspects such as parents, grandparents, and siblings but there are so many other ways to distinct family. The word family is commonly defined as a group of individuals that have the same ancestors, and gather for holidays and other special events. This particular definition is true in so many ways, but everyone goes through life with situations that are brought up that bring together or break apart families. When I think about the word family and my experiences I have gone through and I would consider family to have crazy moments, lots of laughter, and unconditional love. Family to me is getting everyone together and having a good time and acting crazy with your loved ones, making memories.
