After gathering all necessary information about Lucia’s problem, the therapist informed Lucia that she is diagnosed with depression. The therapist wanted to ensure herself and Lucia as well that she understands what was she (therapist) talked about the diagnoses. The therapist explained Lucia that depression is not an illness or a weakness, but rather is an understandable response to life’s difficulties. The Great Depression was a period of lost opportunities and economic decline. After the stock market crashed in 1929, stock market values rapidly declined. The families touched by this period experienced many changes during these 10 years of economic and industrial downturn. More specifically, this moment in time helped children develop resourcefulness while having a negative impact on their social and academic lives. Many American went unemployed and several lost all of their profits due to bank failure; this resulted in many people undertaking poverty. There were many factors that contributed to the Great Depression, but the primary principal was the stock market crash of 1929. At the time, the stock market was a very appealing subject to invest in.

This can have an effect on the person’s emotion and personality. Depression Depression is an illness which involves the body, thoughts and mood; this can have an effect on normal functioning daily. There are emotional, motivational, cognitive and physical symptoms which are linked in with depression. There are two types of explanations of depression one is biological and the other is psychological.

Personal narrative Depression can be a monster and destroy the lives of people, but in my case it help me express my emotions better by helping me be more honest with myself. Depression has never been alien to me. Since middle school I have danced with the devil. I do not know what triggered it then, but it was mostly likely hormones. Despite that ever looming sadness over my head, I was still doing well in school, at least as best as I could do, I still hung out with people and I was still social when I had to be.
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
Firstly, I need to identify the causes and formation of the difficulty situation of my client. I should not involve my own personal emotions when analysing the situation. Next, clarification of the situation is essential. The clients should figure out themselves on how to face the situation. An effective counsellor listen more than talks, and what they do say gives the client a sense of being heard and understood.
