“Previous studies have found a correlation between money and happiness, but the Case Western Study used the data on individuals over time to demonstrate that income can cause a reduction in negative emotions” (www.cnbc.com). There is no doubt that money can buy nice things and allow you to have new and exciting experiences, but many people also find happiness simply by being surrounded by the people they love. A person’s income shapes their life and how they live, yet does it control how happy they are? Jillian Brown Ms. Gibson English 3 4 January, 2023 Can money buy happiness? When someone thinks of happiness, the first thing that comes to mind the most is love, family, success, but no one really expects the answer to be money. The purpose of this essay is to pick apart Mill’s essay and to give my own personal opinion about happiness. Stuart believed that you could achieve happiness by helping others achieve happiness and by finding things that you enjoy in life. I believe the key to happiness is helping other people achieve their happiness, do things that you enjoy doing, and looking at things in the brightest way possible. I honestly believe that everyone wakes up in the morning wanting to be happy, I have never seen a person who wakes up saying, “ I want to have an absolutely miserable day today”. It is human nature to strive for happiness and do things that you enjoy to do.
Joy and happiness are commonly mistaken as the same thing, but joy and happiness are very different. Where happiness can be obtained through small events in life that people forget about the next day, joy is a much greater and substantial emotion. Joy is the only cause of pure, everlasting happiness. “Joy is a state of mind and an orientation of the heart. It is a settled state of contentment, confidence and hope.
Happiness could be defined as a mental or emotional state where we as human beings express intense joy or pleasant emotions. If this definition is considered as the universal definition for happiness, it does not say anything about a range of age to be happier. So, there are many reasons to say that young people does not enjoy more life than older people do. First of all, the age is not the most important thing concerning this topic.
Happiness Unlike fear, which is a momentary emotion, happiness an enduring mood state. It is quite difficult to measure because simply asking people to report on how happy they are will not give a fair overall average of SWB (subjective well-being). This is because people tend to take certain types of emotion into account more than others; this is usually the peak and the end of a situation or event. Another flaw with measuring happiness is that it depends heavily on what mood the person may be in when questioned.
One study revealed that money was an essential need for happiness, but it was not what made the people happy. They established satisfaction in close relationships with loved ones, community work, fulfillment and pride from their work and accomplishments (Diener and Biswas-Diener 162). The highest life satisfaction was found in societies of wealthy nation while the unhappiest nations were the extremely poor ones. When it comes to materialism, it does not matter if someone is rich or poor, all that matters is that “your income is sufficient to your desire,” and that “differences in aspirations lead to very different amounts of happiness” (Diener and Biswas-Diener 170).
Happiness has a broad meaning. One may consider it to be having money, love, or even just enjoying the little things in life. There is no real definition for happiness because it all depends on a person 's perspective of life. Happiness is more about the way you think and act rather than a material possession. It is not something that has a physical form, or that is worth something valuable, yet everybody seeks it.

About 10% to 15% is a result of various measurable life circumstances variables, such as socioeconomic status, marital status, health, income, and others. The remaining 40% is a combination of intentional factors and the results of actions that individuals deliberately engage in to become happier. Studies have also found that most of us are born with a fixed “set point” of happiness that we fall in throughout our lives.
