However, it can be categorized as being content with your place in life with what you are given. First, in order to know happiness, people have to experience countering emotions. “Happiness is being able to ride the wave of every emotion that life throws at you, knowing that you can come out the other side just a little better than what you were before because you have the skills (focus, courage, curiosity), the resources (a positive mindset), and the support structure (a community) to make that happen” stated Penny Locaso, author of “Hacking Happiness. ”Happiness is not just feeling excited and joyful 24/7, it’s more about being confident that everything happens for a reason and knowing that you are strong enough to overcome the bad things that may happen to you. One of those words that is commonly misinterpreted, especially in today's society. In today's society, we believe that happiness is reaching your final destination without any bumps in the road, or being rich and getting everything you want. This is simply not the case; happiness is a person’s satisfaction with life on a day-to-day basis regardless of circumstances. Happiness is being happy with your daily routine and getting up everyday excited to start your day. The most common leading cause for human beings to lose their sense of real happiness is the overuse of technology.
Happiness is an emotion, which makes it subjective, so it is difficult to have a definite meaning for the word. Is happiness just the absence of a negative feeling or is it the feeling of fulfillment and joy? Depending on the person, the answer varies and different activities make different types of people happy. Furthermore, each individual is willing to sacrifice certain materials to bring them joy. Nevertheless, in general, as a society, people sacrifice certain things, like money and time, in order to “make them happy.”
When I undertook this project I wanted to choose female artists who were outstanding at their craft regardless of their gender, while also I wanted female artist who’s work had themes that the mainstream art industry neglected. The three artists I will be focusing on are Dorothea Lange, Emily Carr, and Daphne Odjig. Dorothea Lange was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration. Emily Carr was a Canadian painter and writer heavily inspired by the Aboriginal peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Carr was one of the first painters in Canada to adopt a Modernist and Post-Impressionist painting style.
According to Dr. Lyubomirsky, the happiness is defined as the experience of joy, contentment, positive well-being. Happiness is the combination of good life, while it remains meaningful and rewarding (32). The author says that in order to achieve the happiness, it is necessary to follow five steps to sustain the happiness (257). Firstly, one has to remain positive, to create moments of delights, serenity, enthusiasm, and thrill. Secondly, to choose the variety of activities and give them adequate timing.
Sadness is prevalent in everyone’s life. It causes one to not be themself and feel as if things will not progress. This, however, is not the case. Happiness may not be tangible, yet it is something all can have a grasp on.
Finally, happiness is a basic feeling most people should feel everyday. Happiness can also be shown in a variety of ways as well, it all depends on the person’s personality and how they receive happiness. Whether it be receiving a gift from a loved one, going on a family trip to the mountains, or maybe serving others by volunteering time and finances to people who need it most. Happiness also has an impact on the mental health of others, devastating news lowers serotonin which results in mild cases of depression and anxiety, but joyous news results in endorphins being released which is part of the pleasure center in the brain. Are you happy with your life? This seems like a simple question to answer, but there are many different things to ask yourself when answering this question. Is “happiness” achievable? How do you define “happiness”? What does “happiness” mean to you?
It is clear that happiness is the ultimate everyone’s goal. But it seems like people have their own version when it comes to defining happiness and determining the main factor to acquiring happiness. Happiness is an abstract, subjective concept that its definition varies according to culture, religion and personal background. While Buddhists believe that by detaching oneself from all passions, needs and wants of life, people can achieve happiness; Christians are taught that dedicating one’s life to helping people with pure altruism is the way to obtain eternity happiness.
What happiness is and what makes people happy is a question that may never have a definite answer. . “What is happiness?” is a topic scientists have pondered for quite some time, however, recently scientists have only identified three constituents of happiness: pleasure, engagement, and meaning (Seligman 2). Positive psychology, or the study of what makes people feel fulfilled, has been used by behavioral scientists to measure reported levels of happiness and to identify what causes gaiety. Other emotions, such as sadness, fear, and anger, are as important in life as happiness because happiness would not have meaning without other types of emotions.
In most of the circumstances, people associate happiness with the material wealth among other contemporary factors that make life easy and enjoyable. However, one tends to question the real meaning of happiness when influential individuals and others with luxurious lifestyles end up committing suicide or developing depression. Depending on the factors that account for happiness, it can be relative or absolutes. Relative happiness incorporates dependence on the worldly pleasures (James, 2012). People affiliated with this concept derive happiness and contentment in life from material wealth, such as owning expensive vehicles and homes among other items.
The definition of happiness in the Webster Dictionary “feeling pleasure and enjoyment because of your life, situation, etc.” This is what we think happiness is, its right. We all have felt the feeling of being happy. We love it, most of us want to be happy all the time. Then, there's Unhappiness/sadness, the worst thing ever.
Happiness Unlike fear, which is a momentary emotion, happiness an enduring mood state. It is quite difficult to measure because simply asking people to report on how happy they are will not give a fair overall average of SWB (subjective well-being). This is because people tend to take certain types of emotion into account more than others; this is usually the peak and the end of a situation or event. Another flaw with measuring happiness is that it depends heavily on what mood the person may be in when questioned.
Happiness can be defined in many different ways depending on who you are talking to. To me, it can be found listening to my favorite music with the volume turned all the way up. Through this experience I am able to immerse myself in something I truly love and be a be a better, lighter version of myself. For some, happiness is living in the moment and experiencing life as it passes, but for others it means living a life of virtue. Though happiness may look different for everyone, it is something that everyone is striving for.
