At one point in our lives, everyone will feel some form of jealousy towards another person. Jealousy is known by many as “the green monster” and is a feeling envy at someone or their achievements and advantages. It causes people to do or say things that they don’t mean and may cause them to act out. Like many people, I can recall many times when I envied another person even this weekend! With all these very human emotions often people have issues managing them. In order to understand jealousy, you must know the different types of it. Jealous feelings are different from jealous behaviors. Just as there is a difference between feeling angry and acting in a hostile way, there is a difference between feeling jealous and acting on your jealousy. It’s important to realize that your relationships with people are more likely to be jeopardized by your jealous behavior — such as pouting, and acting out. In order to prevent yourself from acting out, stop and say to yourself, “I know that I am feeling jealous, but I don’t have to act on it.” Accept your jealous thoughts and feelings; when you notice that you are feeling jealous, take a moment, breathe slowly, and observe your thoughts and feelings. understand that jealous thoughts are not the same thing as a reality. Once you have understood this, take a moment to self-reflect and calm your racing mind. Go eat an ice cream or so another fun task to forget about your feelings. Preoccupy your mind as much as you can and you will slowly calm down enough to think about your feelings and resolve your
