Before you read any further just take a few seconds and think of what that word worship means to you and how you worship the Lord.
There are many different forms of worship but one that all believers should have in common is obedience. Worshiping God through singing, dancing and even just spending time in His presence is splendid but how often can God see our worship within our actions: the way we treat others, the lifestyle we live, and how we respond to God when we go through trials? When I looked up synonyms for worship three words that stood out were: devotion, love, and adoration. Do these words align with your worship? Think about some of the people we have a profound love for, our ultimate goal is not to intentionally hurt them. The same applies to God, obeying God’s will is impossible to do without loving God first. Furthermore, if we do not love God how can we attempt to interact with people every day in a loving manner? One major commandment in God’s word is loving our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31), we have to love God first in order to effectively love others. Our devotion to God is just as important, obeying God requires commitment and dedication. This Christian journey is not an overnight process, we will have to go through many trials and we will persevere (James 1:2-4); perseverance develops through commitment and dedication to God. The last word adoration, exemplifies our obedience to God as well; when an individual is adored he or she is greatly respected and admired. Having respect for an individual compared to not having respect for an individual can alter the relationship we have with them. High esteem and respect towards another person causes many of us to treat the person well. People that we respect gain our time, energy, and we in some ways look up to them.
