What Plagiarism Is To study well in college environment, students have to do many things in class as well as at home such as: writing essays, proposals, and projects; doing homework, so on. It is clear that, these days, there are varieties of sources that they can refer and get ideas for their homework, typically the sources of knowledge from books and internet. However, many students mistakenly think that they can copy and paste exactly the information into their essays without mentioning author’s names or quoting sources. These situations are called “Plagiarism”. According to the IVCC Student Handbook, plagiarism is understood as copying another’s ideas and using them as one’s own. Even though it is intentional or unintentional, all plagiarism’s cases are definitely not accepted. First of all, students, sometimes, may unintentionally make mistakes that are considered as plagiarism in their essays. To be more specific, they apply what they read from news, magazines or from the internet to their homework that forget to cite sources, use quotation marks or citation signals. More seriously, instructors will think those students have stolen those ideas of someone instead of doing by themselves.
